How’d We Get Here?
The Kings couldn’t replicate their success from 2022-23 and took some risks over the summer. Their cap structure means that there were limited ways to improve, and they had to do a little salary dumping early on by trading Davion Mitchell and Sasha Vezenkov for Jalen McDaniels. After re-signing Malik Monk, who has been a tremendous pickup, Sacramento’s big move was to acquire DeMar DeRozan via sign-and-trade with the Bulls and Spurs. It cost them Harrison Barnes, but DeRozan is an All-Star talent who has consistently shown the ability to change his game to suit his team’s needs. The fit raises a ton of questions but in the Kings’ position, taking a shot on a top talent and figuring it all out later is a totally defensible move given the lack of alternative pathways.
