The NBA Cup gets underway Friday, and while teams will be focused on winning their opening group-stage games, fantasy managers have a few competitions of their own to worry about.
We’re already seeing the effects of injuries across the league. Indiana is facing at least two weeks without Tyrese Haliburton, Minnesota is adjusting to life without Anthony Edwards, and Toronto now expects Kawhi Leonard to miss multiple weeks. Those aren’t small absences, and the ripple effects are creating opportunities that could reshape fantasy rosters well beyond the weekend.
Wednesday also brought some performances worth paying attention to. Stephen Curry reminded everyone that he’s still capable of taking over a game with 44 points against Minnesota, Jalen Smith delivered another outstanding performance for Chicago, and Trevon Brazile made his first NBA start in Denver’s victory over New Orleans. Meanwhile, the Knicks completed an impressive comeback against Chicago despite another deeply concerning performance from Mikal Bridges.
We’re beginning to move beyond the excitement of the first few games and into a much more important stage of the fantasy season. Some players are establishing roles that should carry significant value over the coming months. Others are benefiting from temporary injuries, and fantasy managers need to decide whether those opportunities are worth pursuing.
Friday brings 10 games, making it a relatively busy slate. But Saturday has seven games and Sunday just four, so there’s still a meaningful opportunity to improve your weekly matchup by approaching the schedule carefully.
