We’re just over a week into the NBA season, and some of the early fantasy decisions are already getting more complicated. Memphis has started 4-0, Sacramento still hasn’t won a game, and a few players who looked like obvious waiver-wire opportunities just days ago are finding out how quickly NBA rotations can change.
That’s one of the challenges of this opening stretch. We spend months projecting how teams will distribute their minutes, only for a couple of injuries, a new lineup combination, or a coach’s decision to change the picture entirely. Sometimes those opportunities last long enough to produce a season-changing pickup. Other times, the window closes before the player gets comfortable.
Tuesday’s game between Sacramento and San Antonio was a pretty good example. Precious Achiuwa entered the night coming off a 39-minute performance, only to play fewer than 14 minutes in a blowout loss. Meanwhile, De’Andre Hunter delivered his best performance of the season. Both players are on the same team, but their fantasy outlooks suddenly look considerably different.
The Indiana Pacers have suffered another devastating setback, with Tyrese Haliburton sustaining a left hamstring strain that will force him to miss time. According to ESPN, the Pacers’ medical staff and Haliburton are still working to establish a recovery timeline, so the extent of his absence remains uncertain. It’s particularly disappointing after his lengthy recovery from an Achilles injury and an encouraging start to the season. Indiana now faces the prospect of playing without its primary playmaker, with Andrew Nembhard also dealing with a neck injury and T.J. McConnell sidelined. Pascal Siakam should take on additional offensive responsibilities, while Quenton Jackson and Braden Smith become names to monitor in deeper leagues as the backcourt rotation adjusts. For fantasy managers, Haliburton remains a clear hold, but this is a significant blow to those who invested in his comeback. Hopefully, the medical evaluations bring some encouraging news about his recovery timeline.
Thursday brings just three games, making it one of the better streaming opportunities of the week. Cleveland visits Atlanta, Sacramento travels to New Orleans, and Memphis faces Portland in a matchup between two teams that have been considerably better than many expected.
There are also some important back-to-back considerations, with three teams playing for the second consecutive night. We’ll need to monitor those injury reports, particularly because several players are already dealing with issues that could affect their availability.
