Paul’s Call to the ‘Pen: September 3

    In this re-re-revamped Call to the ‘Pen, I will talk about the bullpen arms that are actually available for you to pick up.

    For saves leagues, I list a number of arms that are likely to get save chances and are under 50% rostered in Yahoo leagues. I list them in order of priority. 

    For the holds league section, my roster% bar is 10% or under. I highlight some of the top arms to consider for your holds leagues. I chose such a small % as many of the top setup men all have double digit roster rates. I want to focus on arms that are realistically available.

    NOTE – Read the blurbs for each as I note some speculative adds and describe their value.

    Closers under 50% rostered (Yahoo) – listed in order of priority

    Jacob Webb (26%) – CHC – He has struggled lately, but, Daniel Palencia hasn’t gotten off to a good start coming off the IL. Webb did get a vote of confidence from manager Craig Counsell so Webb still needs to be held. But another blow up and on good outing from Palencia could be the end. Both need to be on 12-team rosters. If Webb turns in another couple good outings in save chances, Palencia gets closer to a drop.

    Yoendrys Gomez (37%) – MIN – He is the unquestioned closer of a contending ball club and those don’t grow on trees when it comes to the wire. One blow up in Sacramento isn’t enough to scare me off. He has beaten all the analytics and all the underlying numbers that say he shouldn’t be as good as he has been. But oh well, keep rolling with him.

    Juan Morillo (7%) – ARI – Garcia’s usage to face lefties before giving the ninth to Morillo in the last save chance is the only real recent sign we have. So my guess is the D’Backs are going to play matchups and given Ginkel’s propensity to blow up lately, Morillo is the arm I trust here with Garcia facing lefties, hurting his fantasy value in saves leagues. He also got the save on Wednesday with Garcia going in the seventh.

    Mason Montgomery (33%) – PIT – His K-upside puts him ahead of Senga but the D’Backs are winning more games than the Pirates so I like Morillo’s save opportunity more than Montgomery, but Monty is still well worth an add as he has locked down the ninth for the Pirates.

    Kodai Senga (25%) – NYM – This has to be a product of less and less managers paying attention, right? Senga has a rock solid hold on the ninth and is performing very well with a 1.74 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and a 28.6% K%. as the closer.

    Grant Taylor (36%), Bryan Hudson (3%) – CHW – This has remained a frustrating timeshare as Taylor has earned the right to be the full time closer but Hudson has been far from a slouch and does have consecutive saves. Taylor has also been getting bulk innings as the White Sox may still have start plans for him next year, hurting his value this year.
