Fantasy Basketball Draft Guide 2026: Dynasty & Keeper Leagues for Beginners
Did you draft a stacked redraft team that couldn’t be beat? Do you wish to see your merry band of players stick together and repeat as champions? Or maybe you were holding stashes like Collin Murray-Boyles that were finally starting to emerge as solid fantasy options. Don’t you wish you could retain their roster rights and see them play even better this season???
Then I have the fantasy format for you! Welcome to dynasty (and keeper) leagues, where you can emulate the dream of being the GM of your own basketball league! As someone who was always enamored with the Franchise Mode in any sports video game, dynasty appealed to me as a way to shape my team not just for one season but for seasons in the future. What are the main differences in a dynasty league compared to a redraft league? Glad you asked!
You Can Draft Your Roster For ETERNITY
FOR ETERNITY! That’s right! In a dynasty league you keep the same exact team from one season to the next. There is no such silly thing as a “redraft” where you draft from all the player pool every season. Instead, there is one initial draft to kick off your dynasty league. This is commonly referred to as the “startup draft.” Similar to most redraft leagues, this is usually a snake draft among the managers of your league (with a third-round reversal typically added into the mix). There will be a specialized draft later for rookies (more on that in a bit), but this startup draft is the way players initially get added to each roster. Since you can theoretically hold these players indefinitely, nailing the startup draft is paramount!
The Drafted Player Pool is MUCH Larger
The standard redraft league will see roughly 120-150 players drafted and thus rostered. Dynasty leagues however? At absolute minimum 250 players should be drafted and rostered, and I would argue that minimum bar should be 300. That isn’t including potential minors/stash spots for prospects. This may seem like a lot of players, but the idea is to reward managers for identifying talent and rostering them before they truly become impactful players. The NBA equivalent is the Bucks taking a chance on Ryan Rollins and having him finally break out in in the 2025-26 season. Identifying these rising talents and rostering them before they actually break out is a major component of dynasty and rewards savvy managers. If you could just grab them off the waiver wire as in redraft leagues, then the ability to scout is minimized.
The number of teams in your league will dictate just how many players each team rosters. If you are in a 12-team dynasty, then each team should roster roughly 20-25 players. If you are in a 30-team dynasty, each team should roster 12-14 players.
