It’s an odd time for the whole “buy low, sell high” concept. In most fantasy leagues, the trade deadline has passed. You’re no longer able to make buy-low or sell-high moves in the traditional sense, and most managers are willing to forgo the concept of future performance given that most leagues have less than two weeks left to go. Rightfully, there’s no sense in targeting someone whoย could be good in a week’s time if it means passing over someone whoย is good right now. And if that first player does in fact rise to expectations, you can make the swap when you need to.
So where does that leave us?
Well, first and foremost, in head-to-head leagues, it puts you in position to be aggressive in your adds and drops. Secondly, it puts everyone else still alive in your league to be aggressive in their adds and drops. That means you might actually find a legitimate 12-team value on the rise on waivers. Conversely, there are players due for steps back that you may not want to feel bad about letting go.
In roto leagues you can still play the long game a little bit, but most of the guys who can change your fate in the last week or two of the season are going to come from out of nowhere. They might technically fit either category in this article, but nobody has enough thoughts on Chaney Johnson to say one way or another, right?
Think of the buy low, sell high recommendations now as suggestions. Players you may want to prioritize or deemphasize in your lineups and transactions. We’ve got a few players who look to be heating up and a few others who may already be on their last legs this year.
For the uninitiated, buying low refers to the act of acquiring a player at a discount because their recent performance — which is below their standards/expectations — has changed their perceived value for the player’s current manager. Essentially, it’s trying to acquire a player that you know is going to be a lot better than he has been lately, at a lower cost than you would normally anticipate.
On the flip side, selling high is the opposite; shedding a player at the height of their perceived value thanks to a recent run of good fortune. That could be the result of several things, but at the end of the day you’re trying to get off at the top and extract more value than you would normally anticipate. It’s a simple concept but hard to do, especially if you’re playing with seasoned competition who know the tricks of the trade.
