How’d We Get Here?
The Grizzlies made the bold move to fire Taylor Jenkins deep into the season and the team couldn’t crack through their playoff ceiling. It felt like a step back was coming and the Grizzlies decided to tinker by trading Desmond Bane to Orlando for a haul of draft picks. Out went Bane, in came Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. The Grizzlies also added Ty Jerome to bolster the backcourt while re-signing Jaren Jackson Jr. and Santi Aldama to big new deals. Jackson underwent right foot surgery in early July that casts doubt on his status for opening night, but once he’s healthy the Grizzlies will once again be led by Ja Morant and JJJ. They’re hoping that a new voice behind the bench and a slightly deeper roster can be the magic elixir for a team that has the talent, but not the results.
