Working the Waiver Wire: July 14th

    Today’s waiver wire targets include a trio of players, two rookies and a vet, which sounds like some sort of a buddy cop action-comedy, but I digress. First, we’ve got our two shallow league adds in emerging slugger Addison Barger and returning hurler Sean Manaea. Then, last but not least (but kind of least), we have a deep league add in the form of young outfielder, Dominic Canzone. So, with that being said, let’s get into it!

    Addison Barger – 3B,OF – TOR – 50% Yahoo

    Barger took left-hander Jeffrey Springs deep in Sunday’s loss to the A’s. The two-run homer was a rocket, traveling 448 feet with a 107.8 mph exit velocity. The home run was the rookie’s first off of a lefty all season, as, like many young left-handed bats, Barger is struggling a bit out of the gate with left-handed pitching. Overall, the 25-year-old is slashing a respectable .261/.317/.506 this season with 13 home runs and three stolen bases in 266 plate appearances. The underlying data looks promising as well, as he has managed a .285 xBA, .369 xwOBA, .535 xSLG, 14.5% barrel rate and 54.2% hard-hit rate so far. But it isn’t all good in the hood: Barger’s 24.8% strikeout rate, 7.1% walk rate, 29.9% chase rate and 25.5% whiff rate all need work, and against lefty pitchers, his triple-slash falls to a dismal .214/.283/.357. Conversely, when facing right-handed pitchers, the youngster has a .271/.324/.527 slash line. Due to this discrepancy, Barger finds himself on the bench often against left-handers, which means that, while he remains a shallow league add, he is probably best suited for daily leagues for now.
