With three weeks in the books and us now being partially through the fourth week of the season, things are beginning to settle in some places. However, there are still players and teams who are figuring things out and that is made even worse by injuries. Injuries create new opportunities of course, so we have many, many potential names to sort through for our waiver wire picks.
Injury fill-ins typically have an expiry date though, so ideally we want players who should have an extended run of value or are just too valuable to ignore in the short term. Besides that, there may also be guys who are simply playing their way into larger roles or perhaps finally finding their footing at almost a month into the new campaign.
Double-Check Zone
All of these players should be on a roster, but Yahoo rostered percentages say otherwise. They likely aren’t available in competitive leagues but you should still pause and confirm they aren’t available.
Bennedict Mathurin (60%)
Aaron Nesmith is sidelined until December and Mathurin’s shots are falling. You always bet on young talent breaking out when they start a season like this, and it’s easy to move on if they falter later. Points, threes, FT% (a rare commodity off the wire) and some boards are yours if he’s available, though your FG% may not thank you when he has an off night.
Bilal Coulibaly (54%)
Kyle Kuzma’s recent return could ruin the show by taking away touches, but I want to continue monitoring Coulibaly’s progress. Coulibaly should still be on a roster unless you’re in dire straits already, as we’re simply betting on a breakout talent with a potentially well-rounded stat set here. The usage just might not be enough in the long-term, but it’s too early to decide that as far as I’m concerned. He generally looks more confident and more assertive with the ball. We already knew about the defense.
Scotty Pippen Jr. (52%)
Pippen was producing when Ja Morant was playing basketball as well. There is no reason why he should be available with so many injuries popping up in Memphis.
Brandon Boston Jr. (39%)
Rick Kamla had in-depth thoughts on him already and with Jose Alvarado joining a long list of Pelicans on the sidelines, Boston has all the more runway to minutes and usage for a useful period of time.
