Fantasy Basketball Draft Guide 2026: Single-Category Punt Builds Review

Punting is one of those things that make category-based fantasy basketball so unique. In a points-based fantasy league — that is for any fantasy sport, not just basketball — value is typically more concrete in the form of fantasy points. Fantasy points can fluctuate and there is skill in projecting forward while building out a sound roster, but the values are generally concrete.
In category leagues, punting takes all of that, throws it out the window and slams the window shut for good measure. Punting shakes up the valuation of players significantly, and multiple teams in a single league could therefore have significantly different views on a player as a result.
Punting isn’t necessary, as it has its strengths and weaknesses, but if executed correctly, it works brilliantly. This article reviews the single-category punt builds (i.e., one category punted) based on 2025-26 per-game performances. There will be a companion piece that covers multi-category punt builds.
I will review how successful each single-category punt was in terms of the combined positive and negative impact on the player pool, the ease of building a team with the punt and discuss some of the key players for executing the punt.
Here is the layout of sections:
Single-Category Punt Build Rankings: A 304-player table (reduced from a 582-player pool) that shows every player’s 9-cat per-game rankings, their per-game rank in each punt and a measure of how much their ranking changed (compared to 9-cat) in each punt. Most of the “silly season” players and fringe rotation players were removed.
Single-Cat Punt Builds Review for Every Punt:
Before we start covering the punts, I will discuss stat correlations and also show you what average production looks like for each stat.
Each punt analysis is split into:
Archetype that Gains Value: Position or player type that benefits.
Archetype that Loses Value: Position or player type that is hurt.
Related Stats You Could Accidentally Punt: Closely-related stats that you have to be careful about managing.
Stats That Should be Strengthened: Stats that should be abundant in your punt and likely the areas you should look to dominate and win regularly.
The First Round (1–12 in Punt): Quick list of the top-12 ranked players in the punt.
Top-50 Rank Per Game in Punt: The criteria is players who gain at least five spots of value, to examine notable improvers.
Ranked 51-to-100 Per Game in Punt: Once again, the criteria is at least five spots of value gained.
Other Notable Beneficiaries in Punt: The criteria is players ranked 101-to-200 in the punt who gained at least 10 spots of value. This list is sorted by the largest value gained to concretize trends and takeaways, or to touch on players who had down seasons.
Notable Losses of Value in Punt: Players ranked in the top-100 of 9-cat who lost at least 10 spots of value in the punt. This allows an examination of potential struggles in the punt and an overview of the archetypes that don’t fit the punt.
There will be notes to go with all of those lists, discussing the positive and negative trends, as well as how to manage them.
The Wrap-Up: This brings everything together. I created a “fancy table” to examine the success of each punt by deriving a “quality score” from the aforementioned list based on the punts with the most beneficiaries and lowest losses of value. I then discuss those results.
