Fantasy Basketball Draft Guide 2026: Categorical Scarcity

By Keston Paul Published October 11, 2026 3 min read

While this article is being labeled as “categorical scarcity” because we are discussing fantasy basketball, the more accurate term would be “statistical scarcity.” Before we jump into the specifics of fantasy, you should understand what the term means and how it matters for our purposes.

What elevates a player toward being a first-round pick anyway? You could say it is because they are the star of their NBA team, and while that is somewhat true, it is about their stats. Those first-round picks are giving you a better chance to win multiple categories than the players who are going to be picked after them. They are pillars of statistical scarcity, that is, you are less likely to find the stats that they provide later in the draft — at least not at the same volume or not with the same all-around combinations.

So, what does statistical scarcity truly entail? How does it drive our choices? Why is it impossible to build a team that can win 7-2, 8-1 or 9-0 every week, at least in a competitive league?

The Answer:
Every draft pick has an opportunity cost.
In layman’s terms, when you choose to pick X player whose strengths might be points, threes, assists and FT%, you might be passing on Y player whose strengths are points, rebounds, assists and FG% — who could be picked by the manager after you. One manager gets a lead in threes and FT% from player X, while the other has a lead in rebounds and FG% from player Y, assuming the points and assists are fairly similar — which may not be the case.

So, is there a way to outline the preferable opportunity cost?

The Answer:
Yes, this is about the availability and allocation of resources based on the cost vs. the benefit. That is twofold. You can choose to target specific stats in specific areas of your draft, because you know whether or not they are difficult or easy to find in the future. Stats that become less easy to add later could be prioritized early, while stats that are easy to find later can be delayed targets.
It is also about how much you want to invest in the particular resource (stat). You might be okay with a lower investment in one stat because you have more opportunities to build up the value of two or three other stats. Or in the opposite direction, you might want to have a fairly equal investment in many stats even if you aren’t the best at one stat in particular, giving you some more flexibility to attack the weak stats of another team.

To achieve success in one way, you always have to give up the chance to be successful in another way. There is a cost and there is a benefit.
