One of my favorite aspects of sports video games is the manager simulation part. That’s right I actually prefer building a dynasty team rather than playing all the snaps or possessions or “whathaveyou.” If a sports game doesn’t have accurate contracts or free agency, I’m instantly turned off from them (glaring at NBA2K and Madden).
That love of managerial sports video games fed directly into my love of dynasty sports. The feeling of trading for an underrated player, the magical moment when your second-round draft pick starts contributing, the highs of having your rebuild blossom into a dynasty…those are unmatched moments for me. All the team-building aspects of dynasty appeal to me, whether it’s figuring out your next big star trade or determining which of your fringe players deserves the final roster spot to navigating the chaotic elements of a dynasty rookie draft.
Below, I detail my thought processes and strategy to approaching dynasty leagues, from the startup draft to managing the day-to-day aspects. Whether you are an old pro or just getting into dynasty, I hope you can glean something from “The Ultimate Dynasty Strategy Handbook.”
Gathering your Strategy
Define What “Winning” is to You
The first stage in any new dynasty league is the startup draft. This is where it all starts, where the start of a fabulous journey to a team destined for greatness begins…or you could become the Kings or Pelicans (no, I’m not apologizing to the six fans of those teams reading this). A key component to consider before diving into actual draft strategy is defining what “winning” means for you. For some people like myself, “winning” is building a roster that will someday become a mainstay competitor for the trophy. For others, “winning” could be rostering your favorite player in the league, players from the NBA team you follow, or any number of other things. I’m not here to tell you how to enjoy playing dynasty. Yes, most leagues have some sort of monetary winnings, which is always nice. At the end of the day, though, dynasty fantasy basketball is supposed to be fun. I won’t yuck someone’s yum if they enjoy this activity differently from me. Just understand my upcoming strategy advice will revolve around maintaining and sustaining a competitive winning roster.
How to Win
That said…I assume you are reading this because you are competitive like myself and want to build that Tier 1 Contender, that dynasty squad everyone in your league is jealous of when they pull up your team page.
Okay Mark, but how do we actually “win” our draft? I see three pathways. One — you can go for youth across the board and hope to spike enough hits that you gain excess value. Two — you go the opposite direction and draft win-now veterans to build a dominant squad for today. Third — you aim to draft the most dynasty value on your roster as per a rankings list and eventually win out due to sheer competitive talent advantages.
Personally I opt for Pathway Three out of those options. Youth won’t always hit their upside, and you usually pay a premium in startup drafts for that opportunity. If you go all vets, your team will most likely be devoid of talent in a few seasons. Drafting consistently for the most value will give your team flexibility in the future while allowing your team to compete today. I detail more of this in the Punt Intended pod episode here.
