Pickups of the Day for September 9th

  • We are nearly to the end of the fantasy (and MLB) season, as we only have three Sundays left until the final day of the regular season. That means all head to head leagues should now be in the throes of the playoffs and roto leagues are down to the top teams battling it out for the top spot. Finding value on the waiver wire is tougher than ever, with teams scouring through the dregs to find the tiniest amount of help.

Though the waiver wire may be thin on productivity, there is still value to be found.

Let’s see what kind of help I can find you today.

    Dylan Crews – OF – WAS – 40%, Yahoo

Crews, the number two picks in the 2023 MLB First Year Player’s Draft, is in the perfect position for a top prospect: called up late in the season for a non-tending team that is letting all of it’s youth play. It has to be a surprise for many fantasy baseball managers to see him as a productive MLB player this year, especially with how he struggled early to adapt to lower minor league levels, but here he is.

In just 53 plate appearances, he has 10 hits, six of them for extra bases (three doubles and three home runs), five stolen bases, a 12% walk rate and a 14% strikeout rate. The batting average is dreadful, but with a 0.206 BABIP, that is to be expected. I know it is an incredibly small sample size, but with a 13.5% barrel rate and 40.5% hit rate, plus some pretty solid wheels, I believe that his BABIP, thus his batting average, will raise over the next three weeks as he demonstrates what the Nationals and fantasy managers will get to experience over a full season.

I have a feeling Crews’ impact will be felt over the next three weeks, which leads fantasy managers to have some serious talks about just how high should he be drafted next year (like, should he be drafted before teammate James Wood or after?).

League Size Recommendation: 12 team or deeper leagues
