Pickups of the Day for August 17th

  • Alot of the trade deadlines for fantasy leagues has passed as upgrades to your roster can now only occur through the waiver wire.

Today I have three bats that are way under rostered. One is coming off the injured list soon, the other is starting to break out and the other is breaking out.

    Tommy Edman – 2B, SS, OF – LAD – 30% Yahoo

This might be last call on Edman as he has been tabbed to be activated off the injured list on Monday.

His ability to play all over the field give him a clear path to playing time in LA. Especially with neither Andy Pages or Kevin Kiermaier really locking down centerfield, Enrique Hernandez’s 73wRC+ is another attractive spot. Edman has not played third since 2022 but he can do it.

While yes, his average was down to .248 last year, that was below his expected batting average of .262, which is in the ballpark of his typical average.

He is a clear and present danger on the basepaths as he has 89 steals between 2021-2023. He also has some pop in his bat with 37 homers in those three years.

While the quality of contact numbers don’t support much power, statcast does not say he is hitting more than his xHR numbers. Also of interest are his xHR numbers at Dodger Stadium (65 for his career) vs. his former home (43 homers).

League size recommendation: 12-team, five outfield and deeper
