Pickups of the Day for July 25th

  • Three pickups for today, starting with a gut-feel recommendation of mine from a couple weeks ago, as well as a couple of high ceiling options really starting to heat up. And no, as much as I’d love to gloat about Lawrence Butler, I won’t be including him again. (Pick him up in all formats if you haven’t already)

    Jeff McNeil – NYM – 2B/OF – 50% ESPN

Those who took a gamble on picking up McNeil from my call at the end of June have reaped great rewards thus far, with McNeil posting a .938 OPS in July. He’s hit four home runs since the all star break after hitting only five before it, and this transformation is no accident.

McNeil reverted to his approach from 2021, lengthening his swing to slug more at the cost of some swing and miss. In 2022, he abandoned this very strategy to exploit the shift, and won a batting title as a result, but the inverse action has this time yielded fantastic results. While I don’t expect anywhere near this home run pace, there’s no reason to expect he can’t OPS above .800 the rest of the way.

League Size Recommendation – 8 teams or larger
