2024-25 NBA Draft Guide: Quarterly Ranks Analysis

  • The idea for this concept occurred to me for a few reasons. It was most notably due to frequent questions about certain players in our ask-the-pros Discord channel last season. I was curious about the trends over certain periods of time and decided to look at the season in periods to see what we could learn.

What is the point of this?

    1. To see where patience with a player worked vs. where we should have moved on faster.
    2. To observe general fluctuations in rankings and their main causes.
    3. Draw conclusions which can help us to analyze these situations better in the future.

I have two types of samples here:

Specific rankings and stats over an isolated time frame of 6-to-7 weeks which naturally splits the season into quarters.

Cumulative rankings at the specific time frames. These would have been our “live” rankings at those points of the season upon which we made decisions.

    Season Quarters (9-cat per game)
    First Quarter: 10/24//2023 to 12/03/2023 (6 Weeks)
    Second Quarter: 12/04/2023 to 01/14/2024 (6 Weeks)
    Third Quarter: 01/15/2024 to 03/03/2024 (7 Weeks)
    Fourth Quarter: 03/04/2024 to 04/14/2024 (6 Weeks)

Note: The All-Star Break is in the third quarter, so if you combine the weeks before and after All-Star Weekend like the fantasy season does, it is also technically a six-week period.

Cumulative Season Ranks (9-cat per game)
    6-Week Rank: 12/03/2023
    12-Week Rank: 01/14/2024
    19-Week Rank: 03/03/2024
    25-Week Rank: 04/14/2024

I’m limiting the sample to only 9-cat per-game ranks for the sake of a clear data sample. This is mostly about fluctuations and general performance rather than a straight up deconstruction of the rankings themselves.
