• One week into the season is a good natural, if arbitrary, point in time to assess where your roster is at. You had that first mini-week of games and are now almost done with the second fantasy matchup (in head-to-head leagues) of the season. You can take a look at how your team has performed in its key categories to this point and start to assess what might need changing. Sure, you should give more proven contributors time to get up to speed, and injuries and rust will mess with these early samples, but in the big picture you can get a sense for how your team is actually performing — even if you have to provide some mental extra credit (I had a team that was without Jaren Jackson Jr. in the first week, for example, so I now have a sense of its floor in blocks).

You also get a sense of who is dead weight, and which players on the wire might be able to help you now and down the line. That’s where we come in. Working the Wire will be our mid-late-week check-in on the landscape to see which players you need to go out and add, which could be fun for the short term, and which are considerations if you just need help in a specific area. You may not want to be ultra aggressive this quickly but you are going to find players on this list that will haunt you (how seasonal!) if you drag your feet on a pickup.
