Key Storylines

Silver lining – OK, Detroit fans. You are going through the wringer. And SportsEthos is so generous to let you read this first part for free so let me be your source of light in this dark, dark time (we do fantasy here so this is from a fantasy perspective, but still, all good things). First, Cade Cunningham has had a significantly better December than he played in November. He is averaging 20.8 points on 43.7% shooting overall with 5.4 rebounds, 8.2 dimes, 1.2 steals and a much-improved 2.6 turnovers per game. Specifically, his assists and turnover numbers are much improved and the boards went up a tick. The triples will be there, despite his struggles of late. And while he has slowed down lately, Ausar Thompson has shown us his tremendous upside. And Bojan Bogdanovic is back draining triples, getting buckets and not doing much else. But he does it efficiently so he has solid value in standard leagues. Oh, and Jalen Duren is going to be back. See, positive things can be said about the Pistons. Middleton is out, Connaughton is in – But it is just rest for him coming off his injury, do not worry. Middleton is healthy (go knock on wood). The good thing is, that managers know how to handle his missing time. Pat Connaughton is going to be back and should get minutes. But players like Bobby Portis and Malik Beasley get the biggest bump in value with Middleton out. It is worth noting the progress Middleton has made in his return. In the last five games, he has averaged 14.6 points on 51.8% shooting with 7.6 rebounds, 5.4 assists, 1.8 triples, and 1.2 steals. Some regression in the percentage and boards is to be expected but it will not be anything drastic. Middleton may not get back to his early-round value, but can be a top-80 guy for the rest of the season.
