Key Storylines

Need for Speed (and Defense) – Mavericks are losers of their last three, dropping them to 8th in the West, and just making the play-in tournament. Kyrie and Luka have struggled to find time together on the court, often alternating days off while nursing injuries. Now less than two weeks from the trade deadline, the Mavericks probably need to do something. The latest rumors have them interested in Bruce Brown, who also is supposedly in the mix with the Knicks and Lakers. Mavericks are eighth in the league scoring, so it isn’t the offense that’s holding them back. Their defense will be tested tonight against a Hawks lineup that’s currently sixth in the league in scoring.

Last Days of Dejounte – The Hawks are also losers of their last three. Sitting in tenth place in the East, they’re on the outside looking in at the play-in tournament. It may be time to sell, and rumors are the Hawks’ marquee pick-up last season Dejounte Murray could be on the trading block again. Murray’s been linked to the Lakers, Knicks, and even the Pistons. The Hawks aren’t out of it completely, so they should keep this game competitive. With Trae Young out last game with a concussion, Dejounte led the way with 23-7-7. Even if Trae is back, he should get plenty of opportunity to show off for potential bidders tonight.

For the Mavs, Derrick Jones has underwhelmed recently but can contribute with modest points and defensive stats. For the Hawks, Trae Young (concussion protocol) is questionable, and if he’s out, all the Hawks’ shooters will get a bump. Patty Mills may get more minutes and can be streamed for points and threes.
