We might be at the end of the road as there are about a handful of impact free agents left, and yet Free Agency Rundown series continues unabated.

The LeBron James saga has come to a close and that should theoretically open the floodgates on the next wave of signings as teams vying for James can pivot to other alternatives — like Mario Hezonja! — and the remaining veteran free agents can take stock of the landscape and sign their cheap deals accordingly.

It’s an exciting time of year as all 30 teams are plotting their course for next season. Fans whose teams have been out of it for a long time are locked back in after the draft and every single squad will be making some moves to shake up the roster. It’s a fresh start for everyone in the league and a time when hope is renewed no matter where you finished last season.

Naturally, all that player movement is doubly exciting to fantasy basketball players, as each transaction creates fun new alignments while creating the potential for sleeper values all over the place.

It’s important to remember that no team is even close to being a finished product at this point. Moves get made that create depth chart imbalance, which requires more moves to be made. Things will continue to change and so will fantasy outlooks. Don’t expect the Blazers to enter the season with all those guards, for example — but if they do, get ready for some headaches. The rosters you see in the immediate aftermath of trades and signings are not necessarily what you’ll see on opening night.

The goal of this exercise is to give you running thoughts and live fantasy analysis of all the moves that get made. We’ll need to wait and see how rotations look and how coaches scheme around all their shiny new toys but you’ll be getting our first impressions of every transaction. Get excited — basketball is just around the corner again, already.

Fourth Week of August

Aug 25th: Brandon Williams joins Warriors for one year, $2.6 million

At this stage of the offseason, you have to assume these deals are never fully guaranteed, so Williams likely has to earn his spot through training camp and preseason. He could be a potentially savvy pickup for Golden State as another bucket-getter who could provide some microwave scoring off the bench. Williams’ upside would likely be capped, assuming his best-case outcome is a bench role, but if he can establish himself in the rotation then the scoring punch might be worth a look in deep leagues as the 2026-27 season progresses.

Third Week of August

Friday, August 21: Klay Thompson and DeMar DeRozan joining contenders?

Klay Thompson agrees to buyout with Mavs & set to join Heat on two-year, nearly $13 million deal after clearing waivers

A player option is included for the second year. This takes one name out of a crowded and convoluted Mavs rotation. For Miami, they gain another sharpshooter to spread the floor for Giannis Antetokounmpo. Despite Thompson’s decline, he remains an elite 3-point marksman, knocking down 2.9 treys at a 38.3 percent clip last season. There is a fifth starting spot on offer that Thompson, Tim Hardaway Jr. and others could be fighting over, but even if Thompson starts, he only projects to be a 3-point specialist whose 12-team upside should be limited as a one-cat stud. We will update you if anything changes, but for now, proceed with the expectation that he will be playing in Miami next season.

DeMar DeRozan agrees to one-year union with Nuggets worth $3.9 million 

DeRozan had previously been linked to Denver and Miami, but the Nuggets seemed to be in the front seat and that has been proven true. DeRozan could have an argument to start in Denver, but would likely fit the best as a sixth man who can lead the second unit but still mix in with the starters. After averaging 31.2 MPG for 18.4 points, 2.9 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 1.0 steals and 0.6 threes per game last season, DeRozan’s 12-team ceiling could be in jeopardy if his role lands him more in the 24-to-27 MPG range. He should likely still flirt with 12-team value if that is the case, since the Nuggets should want him to get touches, but the volume may still not quite be enough for consistency in a standard format. Again, that could be different if he starts games regularly.

Thursday, August 20: James Harden re-ups with the Cavs for three years, $97 million

Harden was always expected to re-sign with the Cavs, but was waiting to give them extra financial flexibility to pursue restricted free agents Peyton Watson and Jonathan Kuminga. A day after the Watson acquisition was announced, here we are.

Harden may not the scorer and one-man-offense that he once was, but his game his still aged quite well. 2026-27 will be his age-37 season, but we should continue expecting points, threes, FT% impact, assists and steals that combine into an early-round fantasy producer. He will likely be going at the top or middle of the second round once again with expected production in the same areas. His FG% and turnovers may require some managing, but unless we are talking about the elite of the elite at the start of a draft, there is always give and take for fantasy basketball.

Wednesday, August 19 gives us trade drama!

The multi-team trade sends:

• RFA Peyton Watson to the Cavs on a four-year, $88 million deal via sign-and-trade
• Cam Whitmore to the Cavs (might get waived-and-stretched, unconfirmed)
• Tre Mann & a 2027 Clippers second-round pick to the Wizards
• Max Strus to the Clippers
• Julian Reese to the Nuggets (expected to be waived)
• A 2031 unprotected Cavs first-round pick & 2032 Kings second-round pick to the Nuggets

Peyton Watson in Cleveland: The investment in restricted free agent Watson likely means that the Cavs view him as a long-term starter. Watson had a career year in 2025-26 that was cut short by hamstring issues, but he had seemingly made immense strides on offense. If Watson can maintain some improved 3-point shooting with secondary on-ball production while still racking up reboards, steals and blocks, a potential starting job in Cleveland should make him a player of interest for 12-team leagues. During a 16-game stretch Nikola Jokic missed from December 31 to January 29 last season, Watson averaged 22.1 points (.486 FG%, .718 FT%), 2.3 triples, 5.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.5 blocks for No. 40/50 (8-cat/9-cat) value per game in 36.2 MPG across 15 games played. However, Watson’s usage should not be that high alongside Donovan Mitchell, James Harden and Evan Mobley. It is still worth noting the ceiling he flashed, however, as he would have room to lose touches and still be inside the top-100, hypothetically. Keep in mind that Sam Merrill and perhaps even Jaylon Tyson could also be challenging for that starting SF job, but Watson should have the first crack at it with the size of this investment in him.

Cam Whitmore in Cleveland: We will have to see what Whitmore’s recovery from blood clots is looking like, but the young wing/forward is not guaranteed to be an impact player. Even with Peyton Watson in town, the Cavs could feasibly use more forward depth. Whitmore needs volume as a scoring-oriented player, however, so even if he earns a bench role, he isn’t guaranteed to be productive enough for most fantasy formats. There is also chatter that Whitmore might be waived-and-stretched, but that hasn’t been confirmed yet.

Max Strus with the Clippers: Strus has proven to be a starter-level wing who can offer on-ball defense, secondary ball-handling and some movement shooting. However, the Clippers have a lot of backcourt depth, especially if the Kawhi Leonard trade for Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick and picks is completed, so Strus would not be guaranteed a starting job. That might limit Strus to deep leagues with some spot 12-team streaming upside if other players are out, but if there isn’t a surefire starting job, he wouldn’t be must-roster.

Tre Mann in Washington: Bub Carrington should be the backup PG behind Trae Young, so Mann faces an uphill task to find consistent rotation minutes as a Wizard if they choose to keep him around. Injuries and inconsistency have been the story of his career since he left Oklahoma City, although, the best flashes have been interesting.

Julian Reese is expected to be waived by the Nuggets, so there isn’t anything to consider there. He was also on a two-way contract, which has game limits anyway, so his production during “silly season” in 2025-26 may have just been a flash in the pan.

Monday, August 17 begins with more Kawhi Leonard-Clippers salary-cap circumvention drama

According to multiple ESPN sources, the NBA has not found evidence of money funneled by Clippers owner Steve Ballmer through team sponsors to circumvent the salary cap for Kawhi Leonard, but an NBA media release has since claimed there are “numerous and significant inaccuracies” in the report.

NBA spokesperson Mike Bass has stated ESPN’s report was inaccurate, but here are the main talking points from it. The allegation was that Leonard received extra payment from Ballmer via team sponsors, but nothing has been found to suggest that occurred. However, in the article linked to ESPN’s media release, it was said that the NBA is “focused on whether the team’s introduction of Leonard to team sponsors constitutes a violation of the league’s rules prohibiting salary cap circumvention.” In other words, Ballmer did not funnel funds through sponsors directly, per the report, but there may have still been some rule-breaking done indirectly if the team “found sponsors for Leonard.”

For now, we simply cannot know what parts of the ESPN story to believe until the NBA releases the results of their investigation officially. As a reminder, the deal agreed upon between the Raptors and Clippers would send Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, two first-round picks (unprotected 2031 and 2033), a first-round pick swap (2027) and two second-rounders (2030 and 2033) to the Clippers in exchange for Leonard. That agreement remains on pause for now.

Second Week of August

Aug 14th: Cavs trade Dennis Schröder and cash to the Hornets in return for Tre Mann

Schröder is owed $14.8 million in 2026-27, while Mann is set to earn $8 million in 2026-27, not accounting for any potential partial guarantees for either player. This is likely solely a financial move for the Cavs and Mann might either be waived or simply be a fringe part of the rotation. For Charlotte, Schröder should offer steady point guard play for a team that needs the extra ball-handling outside of rookie Christian Anderson Jr. and presumed starter Coby White. Schröder should continue having deep-league intrigue for fantasy as a source of dimes and steals with solid-enough scoring relative to his bench role. The rookie Anderson will likely have a lower ceiling in 2026-27 as a result, but that should not disincentivize his long-term dynasty appeal as much as his redraft appeal, especially considering Schröder’s seemingly short stays with his teams.

Mann has had flashes of solid NBA potential, but injuries and inconsistent play have also plagued him. Maybe Mann can earn a fringe rotation role in Cleveland, but that would likely be negligible for fantasy. if his contract isn’t fully guaranteed, there may also be a chance that he gets waived later on.

Aug 13th: Bradley Beal agrees to rejoin Clippers on two-year, $13.2 million deal with player option

Law Murray of The Athletic added that the second-year player option is only partially guaranteed for $3 million. Beal opted out of his $5.6 million earlier in the summer to explore his options and had some light links to the Heat, but it seems like he was always likely to return to Los Angeles. Beal’s 2025-26 season ended after only six games as he was forced to undergo season-ending surgery on a left hip fracture. Charania did include a statement that could indicate the injury is healed, and while that isn’t fully clear, it would be surprising if he isn’t ready for the new season. Beal should be a welcome source of offense alongside Darius Garland and possibly Brandon Ingram after the Clippers can hopefully complete the Kawhi Leonard trade, but Keaton Wagler could have a tougher path to production in his rookie campaign as a result. Beal has been injury-prone recently, so that could help Wagler, and while Beal could be a late-round flier for offensive stats, you should not reach too much for such a high-risk player who may not have the same ceiling that he used to.

Birds chirping…

Well, Russell Westbrook retired, so he is off the free agency market. This is the quiet period of the offseason.

There have been rumors about Ben Simmons seeking an NBA return with an intent to represent Australia in international competition as well. In case you missed it, Victor Oladipo has also been working out for NBA teams since Summer League, seeking a comeback.

Trendon Watford is strongly linked to multiple EuroLeague teams, but might be holding out for another NBA chance before committing overseas; a departure appears to be likely, however.

Ethan Thompson is also close to a deal with Partizan and the Pacers waived him to allow the move. He was on a two-way contract, so that frees up a two-way spot in Indiana, possibly for rookie second-round pick Braden Smith.

Other moves with less fantasy implications: Suns waive Haywood Highsmith

First Week of August

Suns Extend Dillon Brooks for Three Years, $73 million

Brooks is locked in as a core guy for the Suns and while this contract may not age particularly well, all Brooks has done since leaving Memphis is prove the kind of impact he can make on an organization. The leopard won’t be changing its spots or anything but this does keep Brooks secure in his role, which means fantasy GMs will be able to expect some points, 3-pointers and steals to go with rocky efficiency. Brooks’ stat set makes it hard to project real 12-team value but he is a viable late-draft option for anyone who feels a little light on points or 3-pointers. It may also be a more stable journey this season as the Suns have taken Royce O’Neale and Grayson Allen out of the equation.

Nuggets sign Lonnie Walker IV

Normally a one-year deal with an overseas player that is likely non-guaranteed doesn’t qualify as something with fantasy implications, but have you seen Denver’s depth chart? The backcourt features Jamal Murray, Christian Braun, Tyus Jones, Julian Strawther and Zyon Pullin. Maybe Alpha Diallo. That’s it. The Nuggets are one injury away from abject disaster and Walker has a better track record than everyone there besides Jones. If Walker makes it to the final roster he may have enough opportunity in front of him to carve out deep-league appeal for his scoring potential. Denver is still waiting for the Peyton Watson situation to resolve and could subsequently make other moves that wipe Walker out, but for now he’s in a prominent enough spot to warrant a mention.

Other moves with less fantasy implications: Clippers sign Jalen Pickett to two-way contract; Raptors sign Trey Jemison to two-way contract; Caleb Houstan signs one-year deal with Pelicans

We have also gotten reports of Terrell Brown Jr. to the Jazz, Alondes Williams to the Wizards and Taelon Peter to the Spurs. All of those are likely just contracts for training camp, but Peter might be the most likely of that group to “stick around” as roster depth.
