How’d We Get Here?
The Spurs had a productive 2024-25 season even if Victor Wembanyama’s season-ending injury was a big blow to morale. San Antonio is once again a destination for players, as evidenced by De’Aaron Fox’s trade request and subsequent extension. That gives the Spurs a pair of stars to build around and some lottery luck landed them Dylan Harper at No. 2 in the draft. The Spurs also sport reigning Rookie of the Year winner Stephon Castle. As the young guys have grown up and the Spurs have added some top-flight talent, the roster is in good shape. They have a foundational talent, an All-Star guard, two lottery guards and strong complementary options at most positions while everything is rounded out by a few stable veterans. Unfortunately the Spurs also said goodbye to legendary coach Gregg Popovich, though his medical leave last season gave new coach Mitch Johnson lots of time to learn the ropes. It’ll be weird seeing anyone other than Popovich behind the bench in San Antonio but it’s a new era in every respect. The Western Conference is a meat grinder and the Spurs might not make their biggest splash yet, but their time is coming.
