• Welcome back SportsEthosians to our premium International Dynasty feature where, in an annual special, we will be looking at some of the biggest letdowns of the season in fantasy basketball and whether the Grinch stole them for good or if you should be stashing/buying low.

We are officially in Week 11 in standard formats which translates to the middle of the season for the majority of leagues so it’s a good time to reflect on your squads and on their short- or long-term outcome. Evaluating where exactly you stand in your league and whether to make a push for the playoffs or to strategically take a step back to build for the future is always a good idea.

This week, I will try to shed some light on the value of international guys in standard 9-cat leagues that haven’t been able to meet expectations so far this year and my verdict on what the basketball situation is telling us and whether you should cut the cord on them or exercise more patience.

    The Grinch Stole My Efficiency!

    Giannis Antetokounmpo, (100% rostered)

Preseason Yahoo ADP: 3 | Current Yahoo ADP: 104

Don’t get me wrong; the numbers are once again massive and the Greek Freak is averaging a career-high 31.2 points this year but he is also turning the ball over a career-worse 3.8 times per game, while averaging less than a block and a steal (for the first time in his career after his rookie year), an atrocious 25 percent from the 3-point line and an equally unimpressive 64 percent from the FT line. The dip in his ADP has been inevitable but, once again, teams that have been constructed on a punt turnovers/FT percentage/triples build should be fine regardless. Still, if that’s not the case, and you feel like exploring the market for a trade, the return can be massive as Giannis is still one of the hottest names in fantasy and all managers want a piece of him.

    Jonas Valanciunas, (94% owned)

Preseason Yahoo ADP: 54 | Current Yahoo ADP: 128

The Pelicans have been one of the most successful stories of the season with Zion being back for good but his return has had an inevitable ripple effect on his teammates with JV being one of them. The Lithuanian big has been getting the same amount of minutes this season but his points, rebounds and assists have gone down while the 0.3 steals and blocks has put the nail of the coffin for his fantasy value. He is still a very productive big who makes his free throws and will hit the occasional triple but whoever drafted him in the middle rounds is definitely not getting that kind of production and you should try to move on from him if the return can deliver a more concrete fantasy asset.
