Fantasy Basketball Draft Guide 2026: Multi-Category Punt Builds Review

Get your lab coats and your goggles as we get deeper into the fantasy basketball science of punting. As we explored during the single-category version of punting, closely-related stats are at risk of being punted if you don’t manage them carefully. Basically, if you are punting FT%, you might accidentally punt threes too — and that can apply to other stat pairs or groups as well.
So what if we just lean into that? Instead of caring about managing stat correlations when punting, you just punt a pair or a group of correlated stats. This article will explore the impact and effectiveness of that strategy, looking back at 2025-26 performances and how values would have shifted in various punt combinations. The goal is to establish whether or not these more complicated and risky punt strategies can work or not.
Here is the layout of sections:
Multi-Category Punt Build Rankings: A 304-player table (reduced from a 582-player pool) that shows every player’s 9-cat ranking, their rank in each multi-cat punt and a measure of how much their ranking changed (compared to 9-cat) in each multi-cat punt. All of this is based on per-game performances.
Multi-Cat Punt Builds Review for Every Punt:
Before we get into the grind of all the multi-cat punts, I mention a bunch of stat correlations which we are going to use for some weirder multi-cat punt combinations alongside the more natural or expected ones. I also have a table showing per-game stat averages, giving you a baseline expectation to consider for players who will benefit, be neutrally impacted or have their value hurt by punting particular stats.
This is split into:
Archetype that Gains Value: Positions and player types that benefit from the particular multi-cat punt.
Archetype that Loses Value: Positions and player types that lose value due to the multi-cat punt.
Related Stats You Could Accidentally Punt: Is there a third or fourth correlated stat that could be impacted by the multi-cat punt?
Stats That Should be Strengthened: Derived from players who benefit, specific beneficial archetypes should provide specific stats more abundantly.
The Top-20 of Punt: Simple list of the top-20 performers per game in the punt.
Top-50 Rank Per Game in Punt: These players gained at least 20 spots of value while ranking inside the top-100 of the multi-cat punt.
Ranked 51-to-100 Per Game in Punt: These players gained at least 20 spots of value while ranking inside the top-100 of the multi-cat punt.
Notable Losses of Value in Punt: Top-100 9-cat performers (ordinary rankings) who lost at least 25 spots of value due to the multi-cat punt.
Upside vs. Downside Summary: Deeper discussion of the effectiveness, drawbacks and whether or not the multi-cat punt can be easily applied to a fantasy squad.
The Wrap-Up: As with the single-cat piece, I created a table that calculates the “quality score” of each punt based on the number of players who gain or lose value, assigning a Roto-esque score for the highest or lowest numbers for each particular list. I then discuss the results.
Spoiler alert, I am covering 15 different multi-cat punts, but not all of them will be viable strategies.
