Paul’s Call to the ‘Pen: July 15

  • In this Call to the ‘Pen, I am going with a new format.

I will talk about the bullpen arms that are actually available for you to pick up.

For saves leagues, I list a number of arms that are likely to get save chances and are under 50% rostered in Yahoo leagues. I list them in order of priority.

For the holds league section, my roster% bar is 10% or under. I highlight some of the top arms to consider for your holds leagues. I chose such a small % as many of the top setup men (Abner Uribe, Bryan King, Alex Vesia) all have double digit roster rates. I want to focus on arms that are realistically available.

NOTE – Read the blurbs for each as I note some speculative adds and describe their value.

Closers under 50% rostered (Yahoo) – listed in order of priority

Grant Taylor – 22% – CHW – he has been threatening to take over the ninth and it looks like he has started to do so. He has three saves since June 1 and that is more than Sean Newcomb and Serathony Dominguez. The latter two can be held in deeper formats but Taylor is the preferred add. Taylor is my priority add among all the listed arms here.

Jacob Webb – 11% – CHC – He and Trent Thornton (1%) have been getting the ninth but Webb has been the better arm all year and is my priority add. The Cubs are a good enough team context to make this a fringe 12-team play with decent upside. But Daniel Palencia should be back by the end of the month. And the Cubs might buy a closer. Thornton just  doesn’t miss bats and walks people. I can’t trust him. Deep league add. Webb gets the nod over Wells because of the team context.

Tyler Wells – 17% – BAL – He got two saves and surprisingly, so did Andrew Kittredge since Ryan Helsely went down. While I think Kittredge (5%) and Rico Garcia (22%) are both worthy adds in deeper formats, Wells is the priority add right now given his swing and miss and K-production that gives him the metrics you look for in a closer. Garcia, while not yet getting a ninth, was the dude and has better numbers than all three of them. Add him deeper formats and the second he gets a ninth, we can scoop him up in 12-teamers.

Yoendrys Gomez – 29% – MIN – Very much like Lange in terms of no K-upside and the metrics are not… good. But also like Lange, ride him while he is hot. Until he starts blowing saves, he is an add.
