We’re just over a month into the season, and there is no better time for some Buy Low, Sell High insights.
It may feel like we have enough data to start making declarative statements about players and their performances. In reality, a little over a month of data isn’t really enough to lock in any stat rates. How can we make any decisions if we don’t know anything???
All that means is that we can turn to prior seasons and trust the larger samples to make informed decisions on individuals’ future stat lines. As other managers start to think that this month sample is closer to “the real thing,” this is where opportunity can strike for us savvier managers.
In addition, injury turnover can create additional chances to find trade options. As players circulate in and out of line-ups, we have to recall which teams have key players entering back into the active rosters and which teams have players out for extended periods. This adds another layer when evaluating player value for rest of the season.
For our second check-in on some buy-lows and sell-highs, most of the players will incorporate these two ideas. Some will be players whom you may want to acquire before they start performing closer to career norms; others are ones that probably can’t keep their overperformance up. What is critical is recognizing where these opportunities are and pulling the trigger so you look like the smart manager.
As quick recap, buying low refers to the act of acquiring a player at a discount because their recent performance — which is below their standards/expectations — has changed their perceived value for the player’s current manager. Essentially, it’s trying to trade for a player that you know is going to be a lot better than he has been lately, and capitalizing on his current manager’s anxieties to do so at a lower cost than you would normally anticipate.
On the flip side, selling high is the opposite; trading away a player at the height of their perceived value thanks to a recent run of good fortune. That could be the result of several things, but at the end of the day you’re trying to get off at the top and extract more value than you would normally anticipate from your trade partner. It’s a simple concept but hard to do, especially if you’re playing with seasoned competition who know the tricks of the trade.
Let’s get into it!
