Yesterday’s big news was the Mavs firing Nico Harrison less than nine months after giving him the authority to trade away a beloved franchise icon in one of the worst moves in league history — and this is the consensus less than nine months after the deal!
The fanbase turned on the organization immediately and most Mavs home games were more about the fans venting their frustrations to management than the game itself. That Dallas has been so uninspiring on the floor only complicated matters. Mavs ownership, who also green-lit the Luka Doncic trade, by the way, decided to end the sideshow and get rid of Harrison after he set the franchise back in unquantifiable ways.
You can’t help but feel for the players, who have been put in a terrible spot. Many of them were acquired purely because of their fit alongside a superstar who is no longer there. Poor Anthony Davis is stuck in an impossible situation, and he’s still an incredible player in his own right. It’s a new day in Dallas but still not a good one. With how quickly Harrison was dismissed after putting an insane stamp on the team, you wonder how he was ever given that power to begin with.
Fantasy-wise, it means the Mavs should be more amenable to ripping this roster down to the studs and rebuilding properly around Cooper Flagg. Keep an eye on the trade rumors and be prepared to make pickups when the time comes. There’s a logjam in the frontcourt and a distinct lack of guards. If the Mavs want to really rebuild, they could even look to trade Davis. A new vision means anything is on the table.
Oh, and the Mavs have a home game tonight. That should be an interesting atmosphere to say the least, but at least the team on the floor can take a breath and not have to hear chants about the GM while they’re trying to play.
Top Pickups
This is the “general must-add” section regardless of the slate. If these players are being overlooked and remain chilling on the waiver wire, consider adding them to your squad.
TJ McConnell (17%)
McConnell made his season debut after missing the first 10 games of the year with a left hamstring strain. He played 11 minutes and the Pacers got absolutely smoked, but he delivered 12 points on .500 shooting with an assist. It wasn’t the best game for evaluation purposes but McConnell has an awesome fantasy stat set and should be pushing for 25 minutes a night when he’s up to speed. He’ll be a solid 12-team value when that happens, so we’d get ahead of the curve if possible and scoop him now. McConnell is a no-brainer if you need assists or steals and the value proposition gets even better if FG% and turnovers are areas of concern for you.
Santi Aldama (42%)
