So you drafted a stacked redraft team. You crushed your league, you took home the trophy and it…all…ends. You have to build it up again? You have to find that Dyson Daniels or Amen Thompson AGAIN and hope your redraft league-mates don’t snipe your sleepers in the later rounds?
Fear not! There is a format where you can retain all your talented players year in and year out – no questions asked! This is called a dynasty league. You ever wanted to emulate the dream of being the GM of your own basketball team? This is (probably) the closest you will get! As someone who was always enamored with the Franchise Mode in any sports video game, dynasty appealed to me as a way to shape my team not just for one season but for seasons in the future. What are the main differences in a dynasty league compared to a redraft league? Glad you asked!
The Team You Draft Is The Team You Get
That’s right! Because in a dynasty league you keep the same exact team from one season to the next, there is just one draft with the full roster of players. This is commonly referred to as the “startup draft.” Similar to most redraft leagues, this is usually a snake draft among the managers of your league (with a third round-reversal typically added into the mix). There will be a specialized draft later for rookies (more on that in a bit), but this startup draft is the way players initially get added to each team. Since you can roster these players indefinitely, nailing the startup draft is paramount!
Rosters are MUCH Larger
Your typical redraft league will usually see roughly 120-150 players rostered. Dynasty leagues however? At absolute minimum 250 players should be rostered, and I would argue that minimum bar should be 300. This may seem like a lot of players, but the idea is to reward managers for identifying talent and rostering them before they truly become impactful players. The NBA equivalent is the Hawks drafting Jalen Johnson and having him finally break out in year three. It defeats the purpose if you are able to grab upside players easily off the waiver wire.
The number of teams in your league will dictate just how many players each team rosters. If you are in a 12-team dynasty, then each team should roster roughly 20-25 players. If you are in a 30-team dynasty, each team should roster 12-14 players.
The Waiver Wire Is Barren
