Detroit Lions
The Lions had a stellar season across the board in 2023. They improved on their 9-8 record from 2022, finishing 12-5 and winning their first NFC North Division title in 30 years. A heartbreaking loss to the San Francisco 49ers ended a wonderful season in Motown, but Lions’ fans finally had a team to cheer for and that should continue into 2024/2025. All of this success was built from the ground up, especially in the trenches. They finished third in total offense, second in passing offense, fifth in rushing and scoring offense, and third in red zone offense.
The real Detroit muscle on this line comes from two players that were both Pro Bowl and All-Pro selections last year. Right tackle Penei Sewell and center Frank Ragnow were some of the best bodyguards in the league, anchoring a line that gave up the fourth fewest sacks in 2023. According to PFF, Sewell led all tackles in total snap count, was the highest graded offensive tackle at 92.8, had the second highest run-blocking grade since 2008, and allowed just one sack last season. These numbers are more impressive considering Sewell was in his second year in the league and is now entering his third at only 23 years old. The future is beyond bright for the Lions star tackle.
Ragnow has been equally as impressive in this recent stretch. He had the highest run-bock grade among centers and was the highest graded center overall last season. When you couple his performance with Sewell’s, it’s easy to see why Detroit’s offense was so successful. Coming into 2024, not only should Sewell and Ragnow dominate opposing defensive lines, but they have big reinforcements with them. The Lions have the tallest player in the league in tackle Dan Skipper, who stands at 6’10” and is a solid veteran backup on the line. They added veteran guard Kevin Zeitler, who is fresh off his first Pro Bowl nod in 2023 with the Baltimore Ravens. These mid-west monsters give another layer of protection to Jared Goff, who was the third-least sacked quarterback last season. There is no reason to expect a fall off from this group in 2024.
