The middle of May is proving to be fertile ground for fantasy reinforcements. As injuries pile up and prospect promotions keep rolling in, several under-rostered names are making waves across the league. Whether you’re streaming for the weekend or hunting long-term upside, today’s pickups offer a little of both. From a high-upside infielder back in the mix to a former first-round arm showing signs of a breakout, here are four players to consider before the competition catches on.
Matt Shaw – 2B/3B/SS – Cubs – 34% rostered (Yahoo)
Shaw rejoined the Cubs this week and wasted no time making an impression, going 2-for-4 with an RBI double and his first major league stolen base Monday in Miami. It was a sharp debut considering Shaw hadn’t appeared in a big-league game since early April. He swiped third as part of a double steal with Kyle Tucker, reminding fantasy managers of the 31 steals he posted in the minors last year.
The 23-year-old is still hitting near the bottom of the order, but with the Cubs’ offense struggling to find consistency, there’s room for Shaw to climb. With power, speed, and multi-position eligibility, he’s an appealing pickup in deeper leagues and a watch-list candidate everywhere else.
