What’s funny about these waiver wire articles is you can go a whole weekend wondering who you would want to feature as a key target, and then one explodes in front of you on Monday night. Such was the case with this week’s gold medalist, who took the keys of one of the league’s best offenses and sped off down the highway. We’ll discuss that and more in today’s podium.
Quick reminder: I’m primarily going to discuss players with below 50% ownership on Yahoo, with possible exceptions if the number is very close. There will be a section for players closer to 75-80% owned later in the article, which will include names to make sure aren’t owned in your league, but those names likely won’t be available in most cases.
The Podium
Gold Medal: Bills RB Ray Davis (13% rostered)
Davis was brilliant in the lead back role in one of the best offenses in the league on Monday night, handling 23 touches for 152 yards. It was eye opening, because Davis has largely been stymied by James Cook and had never played more than 30% of snaps. Despite playing just 58% of snaps as the lead back, that level of workload and efficiency is a massive green light for Davis as a rest-of-season player. Cook will likely take this backfield back soon, but there’s no need for Buffalo to rush him back now, and the Bills play the Seahawks’ awful run defense in two weeks,
Davis will have a role in a great offense going forward regardless of Cook’s timeline, and the Bills will also blow a lot of teams out. Davis should be near universally rostered and he’s still widely available. FAAB Suggestion: 25%
Silver Medal: Giants RB Tyrone Tracy (45%)
Hand up, I did not take Tyrone Tracy seriously after he dominated the Seahawks’ bad run defense in Week 5. Then he put it on the Bengals, and two weeks of RB1 production instead of one pushes him way further toward taking over this job from Devin Singletary. Unfortunately, Tracy has been swooped up in a lot of your leagues already, so I wouldn’t feel comfortable making him the gold medalist this week, even if he’s as viable as the more-available Davis. FAAB Suggestion: 25%
Bronze Medal: Chiefs WR Juju Smith-Schuster (33%)
Last week, when I wrote up Smith-Schuster, he was 6% rostered. This week, he’s still not even close to 50%, and nothing has changed because the Chiefs didn’t play. The case remains the same. The Chiefs haven’t traded for a wide receiver like the Jets and Bills. Besides Travis Kelce, this is Patrick Mahomes’ No. 1 pass catcher at the moment. FAAB Suggestion: 25%
