Pickups of the Night: Pickups Emerge from Towns Injury

    Reid got the start and was as advertised, showcasing the stat-set that has had so many in the fantasy community clamoring to see what he could do. Karl-Anthony Towns (wrist) is out for at least the next two weeks, so Reid looks like he’s in the driver’s seat to continue just going nuts for the foreseeable future. It’s still possible that the Wolves defer to smaller lineups when the matchup dictates, as Reid’s inexperience may not help out in those scenarios. In the meantime, however, he is a worthy add in all competitive formats as we see this play out. 

    Josh Hart (38%)

    Hart was dropped in a handful of spots over the All-Star Break and I am here to ask: Why?? He’s been more than deserving of a roster spot over the last month. Heading into tonight, he’s posted 5th round value in 9-cat over his last 11 games, sporting averages of 10.5 points, 7.6 rebounds, 1.1 steals and 1.8 triples on 46% shooting from the field and 88% shooting from the line. He has the edge over all other wings coming off the bench, and he has given little reason to believe he’s about to fade any time soon.  

    Daniel Theis (41%)

    Theis continues to cruise under the radar as a late-to-mid-round talent over his last month of games, slotting in around the top-80 mark in 9-cat leagues with a combination of sterling percentages and decent rebound and block numbers. He has complete priority as the go-to center over Enes Kanter, and the chances that Robert Williams (hip) knocks him off upon his return are slim. He should be owned in standard leagues.

    James Johnson (10%)

    Johnson didn’t get the start at center but was still fairly effective in the defensive stat department. He was outmatched by the combo of Theis and Kanter but he did manage to collect five defensive stats. It remains to be seen if he will get any other cracks at the starting job when the Wolves go up against smaller opponents, because he is likely not a fantasy value on a regular basis in just 20 minutes. He’s simply a deep-league target for now.

    Gary Trent Jr. (10%)

    Trent Jr. moved into the starting lineup in place of Damian Lillard (groin) and was serviceable. He does not possess the most appealing stat set but will have a ton of chances to score and shoot 3-pointers. He’s really just a deep-league streamer for those two categories until Lillard can return.

    Juancho Hernangomez (24%)

    Hernangomez is a fairly simple fantasy player to peg. You give him minutes in the mid-to-upper 20’s and he will reward you with points, 3’s and rebounds with not a whole lot else to write home about. If you need any of those stats he will have ample opportunity to get them for you so long as KAT is out. He’s more of a 14-team target than a standard league option.
