Mostradomus in Review for Week 9

  • Every week I will do a quick drive thru of the all the games and cover the relevant fantasy points.  I will look at things that might be fluky or here to stay and try and point everyone in the right direction for the future.  We never want to overreact to a small-sample size, but sometimes getting in too early is still better than missing the boat entirely.

    Jets 21 – Texans 13

Almost always back the more desperate team, but desperation can also lead to futility, but in this instance, the Jets rallied to the cause and secured a win to save their season.  Garrett Wilson is the story as he has made the leap or fulfilled his promise, either way he’s a top-five WR after a terrible start.  Aaron Rodgers is clinging to QB1 value by throwing multiple TDs in four of the last five games.  With Davante Adams in town also hauling in TDs, the Jets are a formidable team once again, maybe.  Breece Hall was going as the first overall player in some drafts as he was supposed to be the ideal dual-threat RB, but he only has one receiving TD to go along with three rushing TDs.  He’s getting plenty of yards, but that won’t cut it for most fantasy GMs.  The Texans are on life support, despite a 6-3 record, but luckily they have Nico Collins returning to breath life back into the offense.  Joe Mixon is running wild, but it’s not sustainable at his age and he’s already gotten hurt.  CJ Stroud is trying to put the team on his back, but he’s not quite ready, but everything will be revealed on SNF vs. the Lions.  That has game of the year potential and Tank Dell looked great in an elevated role and he is a must-start the rest of the season even with Collins back.  Stroud isn’t worth starting for fantasy without Collins, but he should be a multiple TD threat with Collins and Dell.

    Pickup of the game: None

    Bills 30 – Dolphins 27

This was a classic game, but the result wasn’t really in doubt as the Bills always beat the Fins.  Josh Allen was incredible and even had a rushing TD taken away.  No Amari Cooper, no problem as Buffalo doesn’t have a top-tier receiving talent, but they have plenty of knives in the cabinet.  Allen and pick and choose who to attack and while it might bite them in the playoffs with the pressure ratcheted up, for now it looks amazing.  The problem for fantasy is, it’s impossible to know who will pop on each day and on this day it was Ray Davis.  He might be the best stash in fantasy, but despite this game, you can’t start him with James Cook healthy.  Khalil Shakir, Dalton Kincaid and Keon Coleman are all solid players, but there are a lot of mouths to feed and we know Josh Allen likes to eat first, especially in the red zone.  Tua Tagovailoa looks pretty good and would have hit his passing yard total if not for a series of backward laterals that lost plenty of yards.  De’Von Achane is the big winner as he is probably the most talented dual-threat RB in the league, but his health will always be a question mark.  Tyreek Hill finally had a decent game, but didn’t score and only had four receptions, albeit for 80 yards.  You just have to hold on and assume the 200 yard explosion is coming any game now.  Once the floodgates open, they might not close again.  Jaylen Waddle had negative yards, which is funny unless you started him and he’s unstartable right now unless it’s a truly great matchup.  Raheem Mostert looks good and is splitting carries with Achane, but he’s a TD or bust kind of player.

Pickup of the game – RB – Ray Davis – Priority High

    Ravens 41 – Broncos 10

The Ravens handled their business after a tough loss last week and they showed that they are a class above these other AFC teams.  The secondary is still patched together with crazy glue and is the biggest weakness, but it didn’t matter in this game as Lamar Jackson was almost perfect and Derrick Henry continued to rumble.  Zay Flowers is pushing hard to be a WR1 and I always liked him this summer, the addition of Diontae Johnson will be a problem though as he has always been a target monster.  There are too many weapons on BAL now to trust anyone in the receiving game outside of Flowers.  It’s a good problem to have.  Justice Hill has fallen off and he can be dropped and Rashod Bateman is on his way to the wire.  Bo Nix was fine, not great, but he is night and day home and away.  Do not start him on the road.  Javonte Williams had the classic Williams RB game and he offers nothing in bad matchups and it was Courtland Sutton who came back from the dead.  I hate Sutton and wouldn’t start him unless I was desperate, but at home in the right matchup, he has flex-play appeal.  The Broncos team is a stayaway for me, but Nix in Superflex at home is a nice play.

Pickup of the game – None

    Chargers 27 – Browns 10

The Jameis Winston run didn’t last long as he was bad Jameis in this game and despite the passing yards, his three INTs sealed the Browns’ fate.  Nick Chubb might not ramped up properly this entire season and I would start him next week vs. NO and then try and trade him for anything as the schedule gets rough.  The Browns are cooked and it’s time to abandon ship as they play the Steelers twice over the next four games.  Cedric Tillman has been a short-term revelation though and congrats if you scooped him off the wire.  Tillman is a WR2 play while Winston is QB and even Jerry Jeudy is showing signs of life.  I hate Jeudy, but he tied for team-league in targets with 11.  David Njoku had an off game, but he should beast next week.  The Chargers are rolling and Justin Herbert is playing the best ball of his career.  He’s not quite on the QB1 radar, but in a pinch he will do as he’s thrown multiple TDs in b2b games and only has one INT on the season.  Darkhorse MVP buzz if you ask me.  J.K Dobbins is in the running for late-round fantasy stud of the season as he is staying healthy and busting big runs as he scored twice this week.  The WR room is surprisingly talented as Ladd McConkey was crowned, only to have Quentin Johnston make a claim for the throne.  Johnston, with an average depth of target of 13.3, has the profile of a typical boom-bust wideout who’s not going to see much of the easy stuff.  Don’t forget Josh Palmer, who is finally healthy and has at least four grabs and 60 yards in each of the last three games.  Through Week 9, Palmer is sixth among all receivers in yards per target.

Pickup of the Game – WR Josh Palmer – Priority Low

    Panthers 25 – Saints 23

Derek Carr may have ended Chris Olave’s career with a pass over the middle and the Saints are officially spiraling to the bottom of the drain.  Former WRs are calling out Carr and they just fired their coach.  The only bright spot is Alvin Kamara, who had over 200 yards, but failed to score.  I would be surprised if he keeps playing the rest of the season and the only other reliable player is now Taysom Hill, who gets to do a little bit of everything.  Bub Means might get some usage if he can return soon, but he’s still a stash with limited upside.  The Panthers got a win and Bryce Young didn’t look terrible, but the floor is still unstable.  Chubba Hubbard keeps playing well, but we may or may not see Jonathan Brooks soon.  Xavier Legette is someone I would target on the wire as they have to throw to someone and I don’t believe in Ja’Tavion Sanders.  Both teams are trash.

Pickup of the game – WR Xavier Legette – Priority Med

    Bengals 41 – Raiders 24

Joe Burrow is playing as well as any QB in the league right now and the only shocking part is that he is doing without Ja’Marr Chase beasting.  Burrow had five TDs and none to Chase, who only had 43 yards.  This game was over early in the second half, so he didn’t have to dial it up, but it’s still concerning without Tee Higgins.  Chase Brown finally broke though and he’s a solid RB2 the rest of the season and Mike Gesicki is going to get hot every once in a while.  The Bengals aren’t dead and are peaking at the right time.  The Raiders are anti-peaking and just fired their OC and have no one else to blame except themselves.  Alexander Mattison shouldn’t be starting in real life or for your fantasy team and Zamir White might be worse.  The good news is that Jakobi Meyers looks great as a WR1 and while he doesn’t have flashy upside, he had 11 targets and made the most of them.  He’s a must-start player the rest of the season.  Brock Bowers was solid, but he is capable of more and the Raiders got some garbage time TDs in this game.  They are not good on either side of the ball.

Pickup of the game –TE Mike Gesicki  – Priority Low
