How’d We Get Here?
The Heat once again failed to craft a contender around Bam Adebayo, resisting the temptation to overpay for big, splashy fixes and instead hoping that Adebayo and Tyler Herro would form a competitive core. They received an All-Star campaign out of Norman Powell and got an under-the-radar season from Andrew Wiggins while Davion Mitchell proved he was not just a flash in the pan, but it was not enough to get the job done. Herro was constantly injured and Powell had a rough second half of the season, leaving Miami out of the dance after just one Play-In game. Adebayo had an incredible individual achievement with his 83-point game against the Wizards, but the Heat as a whole left a lot to be desired. They finally pushed their chips in this summer, trading Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, three first-round picks, a pick swap and a second-round pick for Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis. The Heat have been moving slowly through the summer thereafter outside of extending Andrew Wiggins and signing Tim Hardaway Jr. for some much-needed shooting punch, but figure to be a popular landing spot in the second and third waves of offseason business. The roster has some obvious weak spots and holes to fill but the Heat fancy themselves contenders once again.
