How’d We Get Here?
The Jazz made a big financial commitment to Lauri Markkanen with conveniently timed trade protection that locked him into Utah for a full season. He couldn’t live up to the new deal, however, and the Jazz were dead on arrival as a result. The second half of the season featured lineups that no competitive team would ever trot out and the standings showed as much. They finished with the league’s worst record but caught some bad bounces in the lottery, falling to the No. 5 slot. It wasn’t without positives — rookies Isaiah Collier and Kyle Filipowski were reasonable contributors, Walker Kessler made real progress in a big role and the Jazz got good seasons from veterans Collin Sexton and John Collins. Naturally, they flipped both Sexton and Collins elsewhere over the summer. When Markkanen is at his best the Jazz look like a team that could be interesting with another piece or two, but without that level of play from the franchise guy this looks like the early phases of a major teardown project.
