How’d We Get Here?
The Knicks’ biggest move came behind the bench, where Tom Thibodeau was dismissed after dragging the Knicks back to relevance but not past the Pacers. There was a general sense that Thibodeau would not be the player to push this team past its limit, but it was still shocking for the Knicks to make such a proactive move given this run of success. With former Kings bench boss Mike Brown brought in, the front office waved goodbye to most of the bench group — not that they made much of an impression under Thibodeau’s tight watch — and brought in two higher-caliber reserves to bolster the depth in Guerschon Yabusele and Jordan Clarkson. The Knicks don’t boast a deep roster but they might actually play nine or 10 guys legitimate minutes now, so lengthening the bench was critical. The other big move was signing Mikal Bridges to a four-year, $150 million extension to lock the core in place. With two of the East’s best teams missing their superstar leaders, opportunity knocks. The Knicks are hoping that a fresh voice at the helm can get them to the promised land.
