The All-Star weekend is a time to celebrate the game. We are given an opportunity to see the games biggest stars all playing on the same field, at the same time.
For fantasy managers, it is a time to assess their teams and to identify the guys who are working and identify those who are… not.
We already broke down the players who are not here and now it is time to identify those who have provided their managers with the kind of production that wins leagues.
Catcher
Doug Reid (Follow: @Doug_Reid34) – Will Smith – Almost identical stats to Adley Rutschman, but a .274 BA with a .288 BABIP while Rutschman is hitting.286 with a .310 BABIP. Smith has also 54 less at bats
Jeff Clowers (@EthosJeff) – Adley Rutschman – Off the bat, I think we need to define our overall thought process on what constitutes an “All-Star”, whether in real life or fantasy terms. Is it the best player at the position from this season alone? The best from the past several? Or maybe the most famous player?
Personally, I take a combination of all of them, leaning towards what I call the “Wanna See’em” Factor being the deciding factor. Sure, someone like Seth Lugo has been lights out this year and solid the past few years but, with all due respect to Mr. Lugo, I doubt anyone other than his friends and family would buy All-Star Game tickets specifically to see him.
So, let’s apply that process to one of my most difficult decisions – Adley Rutschman vs. William Contreras.
They have similar profiles overall with their offensive surface stats all closely aligned, though Contreras gets the slight edge on underlying metrics. But, who are you going to want to see more? Who are you hoping to get to say “I remember when I saw him” about more? With apologies to the now “Superior” Contreras and his excellent year so far, Adley is our winner.
Larry Vannozzi (@LarryV86) – William Contreras – He does it all and he does it almost every single day. Has scored 16 more runs than any other catcher and is hitting nearly .300. He even has five SB. What else can you ask for?
