Reid Detmers OVER 5.5 Pitcher Strikeouts
One of the few positives for Angels fans this year has been the emergence of Reid Detmers as a legitimate member of their starting rotation. His strikeout numbers have been really good as indicated by his K/9 which sits at 10.07. The Tigers rank third in total strikeouts over the past 30 days and are top-10 over the season. In Detmers’ last start, he got up to 108 pitches, which tells you that Phil Nevin will let him work.
Jordan Wicks OVER 3.0 Pitcher Strikeouts
The rookie came out of the gate really hot with a nine strikeout performance in his debut. Since then, his strikeout numbers have dipped considerably, but he is still seeing a ton of action. In his four starts, Wicks has averaged 89 pitches and has lasted 15 outs in all four of them. He has only allowed five runs in those four starts and with this number sitting at a very low three, he should be able to manage three strikeouts over that many outs. This is a huge spot for the 24-year-old lefty as both of these teams are fighting for an NL wild card playoff berth.
Underdog Fantasy
Seiya Suzuki OVER 1.5 Hits + Runs + RBIs
Seiya Suzuki has had an excellent sophomore season for the Cubs and he has had an even better month of September. The Cubs need this one after dropping the first two of this series to their wild card rivals and Suzuki has been one of their top offensive contributors recently. In September, Suzuki is hitting .377 with 10 runs scored and 17 RBIs. Ryne Nelson starts for the home team Diamondbacks and his performances of late have been all over the place. Nelson has allowed six runs in three out of his last four starts.
Ryne Nelson OVER 2.5 Earned Runs Allowed
The Diamondbacks will turn to the rookie in a big spot on primetime and he has just not been effective. He was sent down to Triple-A about a month ago and it does not seem to have yielded any positive adjustments. Nelson got crushed by the Mets in his last start, allowing six runs on seven hits. The Cubs will need their offense to carry the day as they are also turning to a rookie in Jordan Wicks. The Cubs need this game to keep their playoff hopes alive and they will have a relatively easy matchup against the rookie right-hander.
