Welcome to Wednesday’s Daily Dish! Ten games took place tonight, and Markelle Fultz’s triple-double helped push the Magic to a win over the Lakers. Injuries are definitely leading to big nights from unlikely heroes, but figuring out whose production is sustainable is of major importance going forward. Here are a few takeaways from the slate.
Adds of the Night
Thaddeus Young, F, Chicago Bulls – 21 minutes, 18 points, eight rebounds, two steals, one block, three 3-pointers, 7-of-9 FG
Wendell Carter Jr.’s absence has been Young’s gain. Young started the season with some decent performances but eventually saw his role diminish in Jim Boylen’s offensive scheme. Lately, he has been building back toward those early season numbers even when he has not gotten big minutes. He has reached double figure points in five of his last seven games and piled up 11 total steals in that time frame. Even the average of 5.4 rebounds is a nice bonus for a guy you may be able to add to the end of your fantasy bench. Now that Daniel Gafford will be out at least two weeks and quite possibly longer, Young’s 41 percent ownership in Yahoo leagues should be on the rise.
Svi Mykhailiuk, G, Detroit Pistons – 29 minutes, 21 points, one rebound, five assists, five 3-pointers, 6-for-9 FG
Derrick Rose may have gotten the start, but Mykhailiuk made the most of things as a reserve. The Ukranian national’s 21 points were a career high. Svi made a pair of threes in the final minute of the third quarter and another early in the fourth. The Pistons never looked back in a 116-103 victory over the Celtics. Mykhailiuk has drained 43 percent of threes this season and 38.9 percent over his career, but playing time has proven to be an issue for quite a while. However, in his last ten games prior to Wednesday he was up to 29 minutes per contest leading to averages of 11.4 points, 2.2 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.1 steals in that span. With Blake Griffin on the shelf, the product of Kansas may be able to improve on his 2.5 made treys per game. Sitting at 5 percent Yahoo ownership, he’s someone to watch for in deeper leagues.
Drop Zone
Here are a couple of players who could be worth cutting if you find a promising free agent.
Danuel House Jr.
Mike D’Antoni essentially used just seven players on Wednesday. With Russell Westbrook returning from a one-game absence, House slid to the bench. Eric Gordon was the only Rocket to make a major impact from a reserve role against the Blazers, and House shot just 2-of-7 from the field including one 3-pointer in six tries. House hasn’t hit double figures since a December 29 matchup in New Orleans, which explains why he can only claim 14 percent Yahoo ownership. Even his foul shooting is down more than five percent compared to 2018-19.
Isaiah Hartenstein
After a 17 point, 15 rebound line on Saturday against the Wolves in the absence of Clint Capela, Hartenstein was something of a hot pickup. The German center had also put together two strong games to close out December as well. Unfortunately, his playing time has evaporated in a big way as he has played only five minutes in his last two appearances. With Capela and P.J. Tucker taking up the lion’s share of court time and the Rockets playing from behind against the Blazers, Hartenstein received nothing more than a cameo on Wednesday. The 2017 second round pick has obvious potential, but he’ll likely need another injury to occur in order to be relevant again. He has fallen to 7 percent ownership in Yahoo.
Injury Report
Alex Caruso took an elbow to the head during the first quarter against the Magic and will be evaluated for concussion symptoms.
Marc Gasol (left hamstring strain) managed to score 15 points during 32 minutes of play.
Steven Adams bruised his right knee during the second quarter against the Raptors and left the court for the night.
Jamal Murray (left ankle) was assisted off the court during the second quarter against the Hornets.
Evan Fournier (right thigh bruise) didn’t play Wednesday after getting injured on Monday.
Nemanja Bjelica (right ankle sprain) played a productive 36 minutes.
Daniel Gafford dislocated his right thumb and will miss 2-4 weeks.
Kristaps Porzingis (right knee soreness) was scratched from Wednesday’s contest.
DeAndre Jordan dislocated his right middle finger on Wednesday and did not return to the game.
Mario Hezonja (back contusion) did not play against the Rockets.
P.J. Tucker (right shoulder stinger) played 30 unremarkable minutes.
Tomas Satoransky (left ankle soreness) scored 18 points in 28 minutes.
Lauri Markkanen (left ankle sprain) played 31 minutes in a win over the Wizards.
Bradley Beal (sore right shoulder) had been declared a game-time decision but played a respectable 27 minutes.
Daniel Theis (right knee soreness) missed Monday’s game but returned to play 28 minutes on Wednesday.
Tyler Herro (left knee bruise) didn’t play after injuring himself on Tuesday.
Bogdan Bogdanovic (right ankle soreness) was held out for a sixth consecutive contest.
Anthony Davis (gluteus maximus contusion) missed a third straight game.
D.J. Augustin (left knee soreness) was ruled out early in the day.
Michael Carter-Williams (left shoulder sprain) was unavailable.
Garrett Temple (right knee contusion) was held out of action.
Bar Nunn
The Heat improved their home record to 18-1, but Wednesday’s victory over the Spurs wasn’t easy. With Jimmy Butler not playing like himself, Kendrick Nunn met the challenge in a big way. He buried a tidy 13-of-18 field goals, scored 33 points, and buried a career-high five triples. Tyler Herro’s absence may have afforded him more opportunities, but that doesn’t change the fact that Nunn has made 63.5 percent from the floor in his last four games. Even the two steals were a surprising addition to his stat line. The 63 percent Yahoo ownership figure seems low in light of everything.
Popular Powell
About a week ago, I stashed Norman Powell in my vacant IR spot. Not all of my moves work out, but the early returns are good on this particular transaction. Powell is now 51 percent owned in Yahoo, a figure that has risen 18 percent in recent days. Fred VanVleet will return eventually, but Powell is making a case to be kept for the foreseeable future. If 23 points in 27 minutes wasn’t enough for you, Powell buried three of four from behind the arc on Wednesday. He also went 9-of-11 from the floor one game after scoring 20 points. All in all, it’s not that shocking given that Powell had three games of 20 points or more before the December 18 contest during which he suffered a shoulder injury. Nevertheless, Powell has paid dividends for owners who stayed patient or simply proved to be opportunistic.
