How’d We Get Here?

The Suns didn’t make the playoffs but finally appear to have some direction. Monty Williams had the team playing some inspired ball, Devin Booker took another step towards stardom, Ricky Rubio stabilized the team’s guard play and the supporting cast of Kelly Oubre and Mikal Bridges showed continued improvement. The one blemish on the year was Deandre Ayton’s 25-game suspension, and it turns out that that might’ve turned the tide of Phoenix’s season given their superb finish. Nobody gave the Suns a shot entering the bubble and yet they ran the table and nearly worked themselves into a play-in game. While the result was the same as usual, the Suns definitely have the look of a team that’s ready to make some noise.

That noise you might’ve heard was the Suns ponying up to trade for Chris Paul. While it cost them Rubio, Oubre and a pair of young guards, the Suns decided to swing for a massive upgrade to get their ascending young core over the hump and into competitive games. It’s always respectable when a smaller-market team pushes its chips in like this, and Paul should be able to elevate everyone’s game, as usual. Phoenix didn’t stop there, adding some depth all over the roster and cementing themselves as a team to watch out for.
