The NBA Cup quarterfinals are set after a busy Friday night, with the Magic and Heat set to tango and the Raptors drawing the Knicks to give the East bracket two great divisional matchups. In the West, San Antonio has a date with the Lakers while the Thunder and Suns will match up after a pretty great game on Friday that saw a shorthanded Phoenix team take OKC to their limit, relatively speaking.
In that game we had Collin Gillespie lead the Suns in scoring, while Jalen Williams returned out of the blue with 11 points, four rebounds, eight assists, two steals, a block and a 3-pointer in 29 minutes of action. Williams shot 3-of-12 from the field and that was the only missing ingredient here. That’s about as strong a start as you can hope for, and while it would’ve been nice to get some updates about his recovery timeline over the last month, that’s all water under the bridge for fantasy GMs. Williams is back and that’s what matters most.
Giannis Antetokounmpo was the other high-profile return on Friday, coming back after four games on the shelf for a groin strain. He went for 30-15-8 in a losing effort against the Knicks but his return will stabilize the Bucks in a significant way.
Anthony Davis was the OTHER other high-profile return on Friday, though he wasn’t up to task quite as much as the others. Davis contributed 12 points, five rebounds, five assists and three blocks in 28 minutes against the Lakers. It must’ve been weird for Davis to watch the Lakers have a ball even though the game was close down to the final minutes. The new collection of All-Stars in purple and gold looks dangerous to say the least.
Top Pickups
This is the “general must-add” section regardless of the slate. If these players are being overlooked and remain chilling on the waiver wire, consider adding them to your squad.
Jay Huff (13%)
Huff moved into the starting lineup on Friday night and came through with the type of game you were hoping to see — 12 points, six rebounds, four blocks and two 3-poiners on 5-of-6 shooting in 22 minutes. He was the last guy to get a shot at starting, yes, even behind James Wiseman, but forced Rick Carlisle’s hand with his play of late. The starting spot hasn’t been a cure-all for whoever owns the job in Indiana but there’s enough to like about Huff’s stat set to make him a clear pickup in any fantasy league.
TJ McConnell (19%)
