The combination of six teams on bye and a ton of injuries make the Week 8 quarterback landscape the shallowest it’s been all season. The drop off after the Top 12-15 this week is one of the steepest I can remember. But, we are likely geting two elite options back.
Let’s go through the rankings for Week 8 as the fantasy season kicks into high gear.
Rank Player Team Opponent Notes 1 Patrick Mahomes KC WAS Mahomes is by far the QB1 right now, both overall and on a per game basis. Meanwhile, Washington got destroyed by Dallas last week. Clear QB1 2 Josh Allen BUF CAR We get Allen back this week, and he gets a pretty soft landing. He and Mahomes are a clear top tier this week. 3 Jalen Hurts PHI NYG Hurts finally let it rip last week. This is a rare early season near-back-to-back. He’s QB5 in PPG, but gets the third spot because of tougher circumstances for the others 4 Lamar Jackson BAL CHI What will Jackson look like in his likely return vs. the Bears? It’s hard to rank him any lower than this, even if I have injury and matchup concerns about his ceiling. 5 Bo Nix DEN DAL I’m always going to rank the QB who faces Dallas highly, especially with the insane production Nix had last week. Can he put together a complete game? 6 Dak Prescott DAL DEN Prescott has been tremendously consistent. The Denver matchup is nervewracking, but very little has held this Dallas defense back. 7 Drake Maye NE CLE While this is a continuation of New England’s bad schedule, it’s a tough task for Maye. He’s top 6 in both points and PPG, but the Browns have allowed the 30th most points to QBs. 8 Baker Mayfield TB NO Something went awry for Mayfield against the Lions, and his weapons are depleted. It’s a poor slate, so he’s still a QB1, but with his lack of rushing upside, he makes me nervous right now. 9 Daniel Jones IND TEN Jones keeps rolling along, but the Titans are a near guaranteed negative game script and an underratedly bad matchup for QBs. He’s a back-end QB1. 10 Justin Herbert LAC MIN Another good QB, tough matchup. Herbert was excellent last week, but is a bit more volatile because of his inconsistent pass rate. 11 Caleb Williams CHI BAL This should be a great matchup, but Ben Johnson has been taking the ball out of Williams’ hands. He’s a trustworthy start, but not a smash with D’andre Swift and even Kyle Monangai rolling. 12 Jordan Love GB PIT This matchup between the last two Packers QBs should be incredibly fun. The key for Love will be other people besides Josh Jacobs scoring TDs. 13 Aaron Rodgers PIT GB Love Rodgers as a revenge game streamer this week. He’s playing great ball and will be ultra-motivated to go wild. 14 Jaxson Dart NYG PHI Dart has been the QB3 for consecutive weeks, one of those weeks against the Eagles. Something about this matchup a second time, with the Eagles ostensibly a good defense, gives me pause. 15 C.J. Stroud HOU SF This offensive line is going to get Stroud killed. If Nico Collins misses the game with his concussion, I’d really struggle to play Stroud. 16 Michael Penix ATL MIA There’s very little appealing about Penix on a consistent basis, but this matchup should be a smash. Big games for Penix, Bijan Robinson, Drake London and Kyle Pitts should all happen in Wekk 8. 17 Joe Flacco CIN NYJ Flacco dominated the Steelers, but the Jets are an awkward matchup. They’re not a good defense, but they’re such a bad offense that their game contexts often stink for QBs. With Flacco having zero rushing upside, this feels like a trap.18 Marcus Mariota WAS KC The fact that we’re already at a backup QB against a good defense at 18 should tell you what you need to know about this week. Mariota is an OK stream if you’re desparate, and should get Terry Mclaurin back.19 Spencer Rattler NO TB Rattler let us down as an interesting streamer last week, as he gave the ball away far too much. He’s back to being one of those weekly starters you don’t want to start. 20 Carson Wentz MIN LAC I can’t believe the Vikings continue to play Wentz. They have to have such little confidence in J.J. McCarthy. Not interested in Wentz vs. the Chargers. 21 Tyrod Taylor NYJ CIN This is a great matchup that the Jets have nobody to take advantage of. They clearly want to play Taylor, but he’s got a minor knee injury. Stay tuned if you’re deciding to roll the dice here. 22 Andy Dalton CAR BUF Another underwhelming veteran backup, Dalton will have to prove himself to anything more than the most desperate of managers, given how bad he looked in 2024. 23 Dillon Gabriel CLE NE Gabriel is the QB40 in PPG. He’s basically unplayable. 24 Cam Ward TEN IND Ward showed some flashes in the first post-Brian Callahan game, but he’s still making far too many mistakes to be trusted to start. 25 Mac Jones SF HOU Houston is the worst matchup for QBs by far this season, so Jones is a definite stayaway, should he start. 26 Tua Tagovailoa MIA ATL Tua goes from tough matchup to tough matchup on the heels of one of the worst fantasy performances ever. No thank you. 27* Justin Fields NYJ CIN If Taylor is truly inactive, Fields would slot in near Penix or Flacco. Otherwise, he can’t be trusted to finish a start. 28* Brock Purdy SF HOU I would not play a gimpy returning Purdy against the Texans. He’d rank right between Wentz and Rattler.
