12-Team Sports Ethos Invitational Super Flex Fantasy Football Draft Review

  • We have been researching players, strategies and teams all summer and sometimes it can get a little convoluted because it’s easier to be optimistic before the games have played and have a ton of players you love You only get to draft one team per draft, so it really forces you to pick a lane and stick to it.  The Sports Ethos Invitational is the perfect blueprint to see how GMs built their teams and which players went before their ADPs and which were generally faded.  This was a Super Flex draft with 3WR and it was not for the weak of heart.  Here is a review of the 12 teams and some analysis into their roster build.

Whereas it can be advantageous to draft late in the first round in traditional 1QB leagues, in Super Flex leagues, it’s priceless to be in that top-five where you can lock in one of truly elite QBs.  We saw four QBs go in the top-five picks and it wouldn’t shock me if that was enough to springboard them into the playoffs.  Going Ja’Marr Chase at five is a nice consolation prize, same with Bijan at six, but after that it’s a battle between going with an elite RB/WR or taking a QB.  You can’t really go wrong in the first round, but clearly McCaffrey has the biggest risk by a mile and while Jefferson has proved he is QB-proof, this season will put it to the the test.  Either way it’s hard to screw up the first round, but ideally if you don’t get an elite QB, you start your team with a bell cow RB as a foundational piece.  I went with Lamb, who I got in the second round in other FanTrax draft, which goes against my own strategy and wasn’t how I wanted to start my draft.  Having said that, he’s one of the best WRs in the league with one of the best best passing QBs in a pass-heavy offense with a terrible defense.  The situation is perfect, it’s just not how I wanted to start my draft.

    Round 2
    1. Derrick Henry(Bal – RB) Big’s Loaf
    2. Nico Collins(Hou – WR) First Down B…
    3. Drake London(Atl – WR) Jon Mosales
    4. Josh Jacobs(GB – RB) Hamarneezy
    5. Patrick Mahomes(KC – QB) Rossi’s Ra…
    6. Amon-Ra St. Brown(Det – WR) JD’s Pancakes
    7. Ashton Jeanty(LV – RB) Key Play Rick
    8. Puka Nacua(LAR – WR) Ice Cold Nat…
    9. Brian Thomas Jr.(Jax – WR) Christopher’…
    10. Malik Nabers(NYG – WR) Gonçalo Tei…
    11. Bucky Irving(TB – RB) Long Shot Jay
    12. Bo Nix(Den – QB) Route Master..

If you went QB/WR in the first round, it’s imperative to grab a RB in the second round.  Big Loaf grabbed Henry to pair with Jefferson and that’s the advantage of punting QB early, you get two players who could easily finish number one at their position.  Brian paired CMC with Collins, who has been one of my favorite targets all summer.  I would never draft CMC, but if you want to chase pure ceiling, there isn’t anyone better.  For some reason I started double QB in a Super Flex draft and While London is one of my favorite players, it’s a huge disadvantage right out of the gate considering how loaded WR is.  I blame hosting a podcast, but I still have time to recover.  I’m in a serious hole at RB and QB right out the gate.   Hambone started RB/RB which is always a great move and add Jacobs, who I don’t love again this year.  Mahomes might be the GOAT, but for fantasy he clearly doesn’t care and without Rashee Rice for six games, I don’t expect many 20 point games early in the season.  My guy Jacob paired Barkley with St. Brown which has promise, wouldn’t be my build, but studs on great teams is always a smart move.  Nacua fell further than he should, but the Rams are a team I’m avoiding like the plague this season.  Nacua’s sketchy health along with Stafford’s terrifies me.  Rick went double RB with Bijan and Jeanty and I have to admit I’m very jealous of that start.  Hein went double WR with Chase/Thomas Jr. which is probably better than my start, but either way, it’s just now the best foundation because it forces you draft by position instead of talent later in the draft.  Jason went Lamar/Bucky which is far and away my favorite start as it locks up two key positions with two elite players.  Anthony was the only team to go double QB and I don’t hate it even if Nix might have peaked as a rookie.  It gives him flexibility for the rest of the draft.
