Working the Waiver Wire: July 16th

  • It’s the All-Star break, when your fantasy league goes quiet, but your waiver wire shouldn’t. With no box scores to chase for a few days, now’s the perfect time to zoom out and stash smart especially for the early contenders out there. This week, we’re highlighting a three-pack of prospects who could be up sooner than you think, plus one injured starter who’s quietly nearing a return. All four are under 60% rostered and available in most formats. Don’t waste the pause. Capitalize on it.

Andrew Painter – SP, Phillies (18% rostered on Yahoo)

The excitement around Painter’s return from Tommy John has cooled following a rough July in Triple-A, but maybe it shouldn’t have. On the season, he owns a 4.97 ERA and 1.42 WHIP through 50.2 innings with 55 strikeouts, but the numbers don’t tell the whole story with Painter. A 6’7 uber pitching prospect, Painter has the talent and pedigree to shake off the rust at the highest level as we have seen with fellow monster of a human, Eury Perez.

Still just 21, Painter is showing signs of regaining his velocity and is a high upside difference maker for contenders that can sacrifice the roster spot right now and those with free NA slots. The Phillies don’t have an obvious need in the rotation, but if Painter strings together a few solid starts, he could get a look in August. He’s a stash-and-watch for those who have the luxury of being able to.
