Working the Waiver Wire: August 18th

  • We are once again going with the “three rookies and a vet” theme today, a theme of which we apparently cannot get enough. This time, however, we will be discussing two starting pitchers and two bats, one of whom is a repeat recommendation from last week’s article. (Seriously, go add Jakob Marsee, people!) Anyway, without further ado, let’s get into it!

    Jakob Marsee – OF – MIA – 47% Yahoo

Marsee just keeps on hitting. On Sunday, the rookie came off the bench and went 2-for-2 with a go-ahead two-run homer, leaving him with a .377/.468/.774 slash line for the season with four home runs, nine runs scored, 15 RBI and six stolen bases in 62 plate appearances. I wrote about Marsee in last week’s article, but since his roster percentage remains relatively low, I decided to do so again.

Naturally, the 24-year-old has cooled down somewhat since his lava-hot start, but overall, his underlying numbers still look great. Marsee’s BABIP, while still high, is now down to .421, while he has maintained an outstanding 14.5% walk rate and has lowered his strikeout rate from 21.6% this time last week, to 17.7% this week. The young outfielder also continues to show discipline at the plate, still boasting an 11.3% chase rate, and his 11.1% whiff rate has not dropped much from the 15.4% of last week. Pair that with the youngster’s excellent quality of contact numbers: a 93.0 mph average exit velocity, a 54.8% hard-hit rate and a 14.3% barrel rate, and we have plenty of signs that indicate continued success for the remainder of the season. Please, don’t make me have to bring this kid up again next week. Add him now in all leagues.
