Working the Waiver Wire: April 10

  • Welcome to the Friday edition of Working the Waiver Wire!

We have a little bit for everyone today including a starting pitcher, a potential closer, a catcher and a multi-position-eligible hitter. Some of these guys are short-term plays while others could be held for the foreseeable future. The one thing they have in common is that they’re great candidates to fill in behind your injured players or replace your poor performers.

    * Note: Although all listed roster percentages are from Yahoo, at the time of the writing of this article, most of our waiver wire recommendations are widely available across all major platforms. *

    Ryan Weathers – SP – Yankees – 27% Rostered

I’ll start with a repeat player from last Friday’s article – Ryan Weathers. He was absolutely dominant in yesterday’s game against the A’s. He pitched eight innings and gave up just one run on seven hits. He rung up seven strikeouts and had zero walks. He didn’t get a win only because Yankee bats were silent (they were one-hit at home by the A’s!).

One week ago, I wrote, “…pick up Weathers now and possibly hold him for at least a couple more starts.” I still stand by that advice. He is tentatively lined up for a two-start week next week when he faces the Angels on Tuesday, April 14, and the Royals on Sunday, April 19. Both are home games in the Bronx.

After yesterday’s masterpiece, Weathers has 18 strikeouts in 16 innings with a 2.81 ERA and 1.38 WHIP. He is winless but that is bound to change soon because he pitches for a winning team. I am aware of his seemingly above-average injury risk but you should claim him right now while he is healthy, throwing well and has a favorable schedule.

    Bryan Baker – RP – Rays – 8% Rostered

Bryan Baker is an opportunity waiting to happen. His team’s high-leverage group has been a mess so it could open the door for him to earns saves. Sure, most of us had preseason expectations that Griffin Jax would lead the Rays in saves but he has been a disaster so far. Also, we thought Garrett Cleavinger could nab a few saves and provide great ratios but he is on the injured list with a calf problem.

Baker netted his first save earlier this week and could be in line for more. His WHIP was 1.11 last year and he’s off to a great 0.25 start this year after giving up just one hit in his first four innings. Don’t wait for Jax to get his act together or for Cleavinger to get healthy. Instead, grab Baker right now and see if he can be “The Man” for the Rays.
