It’s rare to see any significant baseball trades in June, especially in the three wildcard spot era where virtually the entire league can remain in the periphery of the wildcard race for most of the season. To make a move this early, you’ll generally need a team already out of playoff contention, combined with a buyer willing to pay a heavy premium for acquiring their target early. See Aroldis Chapman in 2023, for example. The Royals signed Chapman to a free agent deal, helped him regain his elite velocity, and after a couple of months, traded him to the contending Texas Rangers for Cole Ragans. That move worked out well for both teams in the end, with the Rangers winning the World Series with the help of Chapman, and the Royals acquiring a future ace in Ragans, but the blockbuster from Sunday dwarves a deal for any relief pitcher.
After months of apparently unproductive conversations with Rafael Devers regarding positional flexibility, the Boston Red Sox decided to pull the trigger on one of the most shocking midseason trades in recent major league history, trading Devers and his entire remaining contract, all $280 million of it, to the San Francisco Giants for Kyle Harrison, Jordan Hicks and two prospects. The return wasn’t bad, but the primary value for Boston comes from their ability to get out of a contract that looked more like an albatross with each passing day.
The value from the Giants perspective is more obvious, acquiring one of the best hitters in baseball for a relatively modest return mid- season, especially for a team that so badly needs a thunderous bat in the middle of their order. Today, I’ll be looking at the primary winners and losers from this deal, and how the fantasy value of Devers and others will be affected as a result.
