Is it possible to be the No. 1 waiver wire add of the week twice in the same season, with a sizable gap in between the weeks when it happened? We’re going to put that to the test in this week’s waiver column. We’ve reached the juncture of the season where most of major opportunities are going to come from injuries, and there’s one situation in particular that has been blown open by Week 7 injuries.
Quick reminder: I’m primarily going to discuss players with below 50% ownership on Yahoo, with possible exceptions if the number is very close. There will be a section for players closer to 75-80% owned later in the article, which will include names to make sure aren’t owned in your league, but those names likely won’t be available in most cases.
The Podium
Gold Medal: Niners WR Jauan Jennings (30% rostered)
Jennings is still the only WR to score three touchdowns in a game this season, doing so the first time Deebo Samuel went down in Week 3. Now, Brandon Aiyuk has torn his ACL, Samuel is in the hospital with pneumonia, and George Kittle has a minor foot injury. Jennings has missed a few games with a hip injury, but that’s why he’s once again become available.
His past performance with any one of the Niners Big 3 pass catchers out dictates that if he suits up, he has a chance to put up excellent performances. Obviously, it will be important to monitor his status, but with Aiyuk’s injury being season-ending, Jennings has real rest-of-season value. FAAB Suggestion: 20-25%
Silver Medal: Niners WR Ricky Pearsall (13%)
Pearsall got shot in the chest two months ago and is somehow the Niners’ healthiest receiver right now. He was the Niners first-round pick, and now opportunity has suddenly arrived. He was just so-so in his season debut in Week 7, catching three-of-five targets for 31 yards. He will definitely have to grow into the role, which is why I favor Jennings quite a bit.
Even if you don’t start Pearsall right away because he has some growing pains, he’s going to have some sort of late season value. There’s just no way he can be on waivers with Aiyuk and Samuel out, and he’s significantly more available than Jennings. FAAB Suggestion: 15-20%
Bronze Medal: Bucs WR Jalen McMillan (1%)
A late breaking medalist here, the Bucs look likely to be without both Mike Evans and Chris Godwin for multiple weeks after a disastrous Monday Night Football loss. McMillan has looked the part in limited action thus far, but has obviously been hampered significantly by the workloads of Evans and Godwin, as well as an injury of his own. The rookie will likely be heavily involved over the next few weeks, and will have legitimate standalone value rest-of-season once Godwin goes on IR. FAAB Suggestion: 15-20%
