Pickups of the Day for August 20th

  • The Dog Days of summer are here, it’s August. It’s hot everywhere, it’s vacation time, and up to half of your league is no longer paying attention.  But don’t despair, as long as you are within striking distance of the top three in your pool, or the money spots, plenty can still happen.  The waiver wire is very thin in most leagues at this time of the season, and very few prospects are on their way up so you need to deep dive and hope to find a player, or two that will give you marginal gains in the categories that you need help in.  With that in mind, here are a few;

    Albert Suarez – SP – BAL – 25% Yahoo, 36% FanTrax, 21% CBS

    Suarez has been a model of inconsistency this season as seen in his 9-12 record, 3.91 ERA and 1.29 WHIP.  However, in nine of his fifteen starts he has allowed two earned runs of less.  In his last three starts he hasn’t allowed a single run over 17.2 innings while giving up thirteen hits, three walks and seventeen strikeouts.  His greatest skill is suppressing hard contact, his is currently in the 86th percentile in Barrel%  and 59th percentile in Hard-Hit%, this has led to him giving up just 0.56 HR/9 which is well below the league average of 1.19%.  Playing his home games in Camden Yards certainly helps this with the deep left field fence.  This is a risky pick however, at this stage of the season decent starting pitching is hard to find and with Suarez being on the Orioles, he stands a better chance to secure you a win then most teams.

    League size recommendation: 12-team leagues or deeper
