A closer came off the injured list but did not get his job back as things look good in Detroit. Things for the Dodgers are still in flux and same for the Yanks. The Rays just don’t figure to just choose one arm and Carlos Estevez did well but Rob Thomson is still his manager.
And of course the holds situation is always changing.
For the closer’s roles, I have four tiers:
Strong – No reason to believe they will be losing the job.
Solid – They are still the closer, but there is a chance it can change.
Weak – They’re a CINOÂ (Closer in name only) and are in clear danger of losing the job.
Committee – there is no set closer and numerous arms could get the call.
For holds, I’ll be listing the names of the dudes who have gotten holds most recently and telling you which ones to trust.
St. Louis Cardinals
Closer – Ryan Helsley – Strong (LW: Strong)
Ryan Helsley and Ryan Fernandez each got a save over the last seven days.
Fernandez struck out three in a perfect ninth to record his second save of the year.
Helsley piched two innings in night before and gave him the opportunity to shark the save.
Helsley is the closer. Duh.
Holds
There were no holds.
Fernandez’s usage as the closer in place of Helsley shows a level of confidence in using him. He and Kittredge (two holds over last 14) are the key arms to have for holds based on their performance and production.
