With trade season finally over, MLB teams can now shift their focus to winning every day with the players that they have, or in the case of the few selling clubs, building for the future. The many players whose futures were in jeopardy now have a definitive resolution for the rest of the season at least, for better or worse, and the same could be said with the leagues most active ballclubs.
Today, I’ll go through the three biggest winners and losers from the trade deadline, what they did well, what they could’ve done better, and what it means for their short and long-term outlooks.
Winners
San Diego Padres
AJ Preller has developed quite the reputation for going all in at the deadline, and his 2025 trades might’ve been his most aggressive yet, headlined by the acquisition of Athletics closer Mason Miller for a package including the number three overall prospect in baseball, Leodalis de Vries. They didn’t just stop there, trading for Freddy Fermin to upgrade the catching position, Ramon Laureano to play left field every day, J.P. Sears in the Miller deal, Nestor Cortes for pitching depth, and Ryan O’Hearn for some left-handed thump. Contrary to popular belief, they traded neither Dylan Cease or Robert Suarez, leaving them with the best bullpen in baseball, an elite starting rotation and a greatly improved lineup. The prospect cost was immense, but they’ve still got enough in the tank for another move in the off-season, and for an organization that has drafted and developed minor leaguers as well as they have, the insane degree of acquired major league talent dwarfs the impact of the lost prospects.
